Summer, 1993

Humanae Vitae Conference

We gathered in Omaha, that summer of 1993, to celebrate 25 years of Humanae Vitae. There were 1,500 of us from 29 countries, a veritable small village of doctors, historians, nurses, nursing mothers, priests, scientists, nuns, young married couples, single people, bishops, Lutherans, a cardinal, politicians, philosophers, theologians, publishers — even an ex-abortionist.

One evening, after a day of talks and small-group sessions, we were bussed to an off-site auditorium, one large enough to hold us all.

The lights dimmed, the murmuring ceased, and the tall theater curtain parted just enough to reveal 16-year old Gianna Jessen, center-stage, beautiful in a long black velvet gown. And Gianna started to sing.

Gianna, with the voice of an angel, had us in the palm of her hand.

When she was finished, when the thunderous applause was done, the curtain closed.

We never saw her halting steps as she left the stage.

We would not have seen that Gianna has cerebral palsy. Wouldn’t have known why.

But we did know. We had been told.

Gianna Jessen had been aborted.  She had been left to die in a Los Angeles hospital.  And she had been rescued.

The saline solution had burned her body and the long time without oxygen left her with cerebral palsy.

Gianna is 31 now. She still sings. She even runs in marathons!

And she speaks out on behalf of other children aborted and left to die. She has spoken out in a new ad aimed at presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Last night Gianna was a guest on the Hannity & Colmes show. What a joy to see her again!

One wonders how Mr. Colmes can live with himself after arguing with her……

Oh, he has his reasons, you might say. And you may have yours.

I challenge you: imagine yourself bringing your nuanced pro-abortion arguments to Gianna and explaining to her the fine points of your position. Bring your list. Your list is long. You’ve thought this through.

But first, first, listen to Gianna sing.

How awful to attempt to abort a pregnacy so far along as Gianna must have been when one was attempted on her mother.

For the life of me I will never understand ones who claim to have faith in Christ and not understand that the only way abortions will stop is when these hearts turn to Christ, then there will be no sex outside wedlock and a discontinuance of a sinful lifestyle because those who are sincere will not want to displease God. Their first desire will be to please God, not some guy or even their own wills.

Did anyone ever hear of or read in scripture any example of Christ being an activist on behalf of children who where sacrificed to the false god Molech? Scripture tells us that there were those who worshiped Molech and these ones sacrificed their children to this false god, a very popular practice in His day? NO! Wonder why? Because Christ wanted these who practiced such evil to turn their hearts to God to Him.

Christ understood as we all who follow Him should, that people who are prisoners of sin, their hearts are far from the true God, His father.

God was and is only interested in people having true LIFE, eternal life which requires one as taught by Christ and the disciples, to have a change of heart (true repentence), genuine faith in Christ, and a complete turning away from a sinful lifestyle. To place the main concern on saving the lives of these children who were being sacrificed to Molech would have been against every reason that God sent to us Christ, and, sad and as distraughting as it is that children die and are brutally murdered, raped and killed etc. they are with God and will receive eternal life when that day comes.

The lives that God wants us to concern ourselves with are those who are at risk of truly losing their LIFE and not receiving eternal life. And HE want those who claim to be believers when we face others who claim to be believers behave as sinners to remove them from among us and out of our mist so that maybe they can be saved through true repentence after Satan tries to destroy them out in the world.

D. Walker, I don’t know that anti-abortion positions have to be linked to Christianity. That makes it too easy for people to dismiss pro-lifers as trying to impose their religious views on others when they oppose abortion.

Making it primarily a religious issue takes credibility away from the cause. It’s a civil rights issue. Anyone can get behind that, no matter their faith/lack thereof.

YES, what she said.

I think I’ve said this a million times on these blogs.

That being said, I still reject the doctrine that it is wrong for Christians to take a stance on this issue. Christ did not come to the world to rid it of evil while he was alive-I accept this. But, there is NOTHING to suggest that he didn’t oppose murdering children because He ONLY wanted the murderer’s hearts to change. This just guesswork theology. Remember this is the same Jesus that said “that which you do to the least of these you do as unto Me.” So, we’re to believe He would have us sit out the fight against murdering children. You truly have a different idea of Jesus than the one in the Bible.

Mike,

My God! I never said that Christ did not oppose murdering children. For God’s sake He opposed ALL sin and evil.

And Jenny, I am not attempting to be rude but, please understand that I desire to see all things the spiritual realm of things and the fact that this is a religious blog I have no problem doing that and I am under the impression that all discussions and comments are expected to be based upon religious views.

I hear you though, what you are saying, that not all who are “pro-life” are Christians. Really, thanks for bringing that to my attention because I truly never even think about the abortion issue as an issue for those who are not Christians.

D Walker — I wasn’t questioning your right to express religious viewpoints (especially on a religious blog!)

I was just pointing out that your post — “I will never understand ones who claim to have faith in Christ and not understand that the only way abortions will stop is when these hearts turn to Christ” — seems to indicate that only those who are Christians have a reason to be opposed to abortion. I don’t think that’s the case. And I would guess that most true pro-lifers would welcome *anyone* to join the cause, regardless of faith or lack thereof.
