Obama’s hysterical abortion ad
Ever since 1973, the year of Roe v. Wade, I’ve followed the histrionic ravings of NARAL, NOW and other professional abortion supporters. as they attempt to frighten enlighten the public.
I’ve read their websites, watched their vulgar marches, perused their op/eds and letters-to-the editor, all the while shaking my head. Why do these people go about pleading their cause in such self-defeating ways?
As a matter of fact, four years ago I wrote an op/ed published by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Tips for Pro-Choice Advocates. Yes, I was so annoyed by their ineptitude, I wrote an article giving them advice.
(If you’re interested in background to that article, and curious to see whether or not my tactic was risky, go to the Issues, Etc. archive for an audio interview.)
I mention this because a very recent, brief Barack Obama abortion ad Barack Obama abortion ad is in the works. After a “nurse-practitioner” intro, an announcer concludes, “As president, John McCain will make abortion illegal.”
Whoa. Those are red-hot words.
Phil Lawler, over at Catholic World News, pours on some much needed cold water:
“As president, John McCain will make abortion illegal,” an announcer says on a new Obama campaign spot.
That simple declarative sentence is misleading– indeed it is obviously intended to mislead.
While he opposes legal abortion, McCain has given absolutely no indication that he would attempt to outlaw the practice.
President Bush, whose pro-life credentials are at least as strong as McCain’s has not attempted to legalize a ban on abortion.
Why not? Because Congress would not pass an abortion ban, and even if by some miracle the majority in Congress did support a measure making abortion illegal, the Supreme Court (as currently composed) would overturn it.
Like it or not, this simple, declarative sentence is undeniably true: “As president, John McCain will not make abortion illegal.”
Obama knows that. His campaign staff knows that. His ad tells the public otherwise.
So why does this presidential candidate known for his intelligence, precision and “nuance” — aka hair-splitting — allow himself to state, “I am Barack Obama and I approve this message”?

Sherry Tyree, 66, a graduate of John Burroughs School and Washington University, is a founding member (1984) and Vice President of Women for Faith & Family, a national Catholic women's organization that supports and defends traditional church teachings. Sherry is married to Dr. Donald A. Tyree, professor emeritus, School of Business, St. Louis University.
Forget it Sherry, this is about a lot more than one devisive issue, as so many voters know. Get off your cheerleading ass and start screaming at the Catholic hierarchy. 45 million poor Americans are uninsured. Where is the outrage? Young Americans dying in a now known jimmied-up war. Where is the outrage? Thousands of families left behind while their husbands are fihghting a war will eventually file for bankruptcy. Wher is the outrage? Disparity between the wealthiest and average American’s income at an alltime high since before the depression. Where is the outrage?
I hate abortion. No one that I know ‘likes’ abortion. If the Catholic hierarchy thinks it’s necessary to step into the politcal arena on this issue, then they should step all the way into the fray. If they detest the killing of the innocent, then they should detest the killing of all innocents. They should detest the Iraq war and all politicians who support it. They should detest the death penalty and all politians who support it. They should detest the decrease in funding for the poor and all politicians who support it. Get off your Johnny-one-note soap box and start advocating a true respect for all human life. Until you do that, your mantra of demonizing Obama only exposes the hypocrisy of the ones you support.
Reminding the majority that favor legal abortion what may happen if an anti-abortion president is elected is not hysterical, it is just informative. Presidents control appointments to the supreme court and all it will take is one more vacancy to tip the balance and quite likely put finito to Roe v. Wade. Since you oppose abortion, you are free to vote against him, but you shouldn’t get so worked up when he lets the rest of us know what the likely consequences of that vote would be.

Mogoid-
Let’s get a couple things straight. The Catholic Church was against the war before it started. Pope JP II made an impassioned speech saying that “God does not want war”. The Church has consistently been against the death penalty. The Church is also for a more humane treatment of immigrants and is vehemently opposed to tearing families apart.
Who is the largest private provider of social services in the entire state of Missouri? Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of St. Louis.
Abortion is a very divisive issue. I don’t advocate voting based upon one issue, but it is an important issue to Catholics, as it is an intrinsic evil. Sorry you don’t see it the same way, but your views of the Church are uninformed and as far as I can tell, are based upon antiquated anti-Catholic bigotry.
So, from now until the election, we’re going to see Sherry Tyree pushing the abortion wedge issue for the radical right to “energize the base” as they say. Sherry, do you get paid by the RNC or the Missouri Republican Party to pimp their wedge issues? Is gay marriage out this election cycle? How about flag burning? Terrorism fear mongering? No, just the abortion issue? Good luck with that. Most voters are too smart to fall for right-wing propaganda. Karl Rove, Rush Limbaugh and their ilk really don’t have a lot of credibility any more and neither do you.
Sherry, I went and read your op-ed article. Might I humbly suggest that you edit it and send it to the pro-life groups as well? Much of the advice is great, particularly where it suggests calming down the rhetoric, eliminating the use of hyperbole, and careful use and citations of statistics.
Tell me, how may pro-life groups vociferously condemn those of their number who send out assassination lists of abortion doctors? It’s great to suggest a better tactic to one’s opponents…but it’s a case of the pot calling kettle black when one doesn’t heed one’s own advice.
Wowee–you are so right that the Catholic Church is about much more than abortion. It is the church that motivated people like Dorothy Day and Paulo Freire and as such is deserving of sincere respect.
I consider myself a pro-life person who considers abortion to be an acceptable choice for a woman. I believe that the issue of respect for life is about so much more than terminating a pregnancy although I respect those though who feel that they must struggle against what they truly believe to be “intrinsic evil.” It is a genuinely complex issue that deserved real debate, not the shrill knee-jerk reactions that it seems to elicit on either side.
I just hope that there are Catholics out there who can look at the whole picture when they are making their decision this election year and find it in themselves to be just as appalled at the needless deaths of 100s of thousands of Iraquis, the displacement of even more, and, of course, the needless death and maiming of thousands of young men from the United States. Surely these fully formed, functioning people have value too? And most of them were innocent of any crime that should have resulted in their misfortunes.
And if this is so, how could anyone ever vote for John McCain, who not only supports this war, but seems almost eager to commit us to other wars–remember the bambastic, posturing statement that “We are all Georgians,” after the Georgians put down a rebellion in a disputed province? McCain is far too ready to beat the war-drums, and that is not an acceptable pro-life attitude to me.
Hypocrisy is what people HATE.
How on earth can the Catholic Church claim to be so PRO-LIFE when the church has had no problem destroying children’s lives and protecting the very priest that destroyed children’s lives?
The Catholic Church has bigger problems than worrying about those who are in the world having and performing abortions. The Catholic Church needs to rid their Church of the pedophilia / pervert demons that the Church has been infested with and have been ALLOWED for generations and allowing these known perverted rapist priest access to Catholic children, and worst of all, protect these priest perverts in the Church.
This has been going on for a long, long time. I personally know a man 63 years old who was raped by priest(s), not just one priest but many in a Catholic orphanage. Now here is INTRINSIC EVIL. And, if any Catholic believes that those pedophilia and perverted demonic forces just go away they are really blind. Those demons are such strongholds within the Catholic Church that a parent would be crazy to entrust her child within that Church unsupervised by a parent at all times.
The Catholic Church is infested with these perverted demons and this is what the Catholic Church needs to concentrate on in the spiritual realm because it is the only way to rid the Church of the problem and excommunicating these perverted priest from amongst you instead of protecting them and excepting them among you.
The hypocrisy is that the Catholic Church has placed so much energy on attempting to publicly humiliate politicians who are Catholic and who are PRO-LIFE, but the same Church have protected, covered up in secrecy priest who rape their children within the Church. THAT IS EVIL and it is foolish to think that your good works can make up for that EVIL.
D Walker is the poster child of two faced hypocrisy.
Weren’t you the one writing about how conservatives bash the poor who have children out of wedlock or have abortions? You said that we should pray for them and help them find God and remember they are human instead of forcing morality on them and judging them. That standard doesn’t apply for the few priests who have sinned apparently. They aren’t human? Ah, yes, they are Catholic priests, so they deserve your venom instead…
There’s never been a minister or a rabbi or an iman or a reverand that has ever done anything to a child and been moved to another church/temple/mosque of course. No, these things ONLY happen with Catholic priests…
Despite all your obvious hate for the Catholic Church, you miss the point entirely. You have said abortion is wrong, yet the RCC can’t say come out against it because they have sinned? Seems to me the Bible mentions something about casting the first stone. I’m a sinner too, should I just ignore the evil of abortion as well?
You talk a great game D, but you always manage to show those big wolf teeth if that sheep outfit you wear. You only show mercy and forgiveness and understanding to those that fit your political ideals, instead of having your political ideals fit the word of God. It seems like everytime you post I end up pointing out a story in the Bible that you have slapped in the face with arrogance and hypocrisy.
I hope you can one day find peace…
Tim,
Let me tell you a story of forgiveness. There was a young man who at 11 years of age had been raped by a man. The entire child hood life of this child, he had fantasized and planned to murder his rapist when he got big enough and strong enough. One day this victimized child decided the day had come when he would murder his abuser. But, he had a change of heart. He states that God, the Holy Spirit spoke to his heart and ministered to him about God’s GRACE. That if He could forgive us of our sin then he too must forgive his abuser and that vengeance where due was His (God’s). This young man knew that it was God who spoke to his heart and was able to truly trust in God and forgive his abuser. THIS IS FORGIVENESS!
The problem here is that YOU (Tim) do not know God’s word!
There is no hypocrisy in anything that I have stated.
The Catholic Church did not handle these wolves as directed scripturally! The difference between the poor and those unwed mothers in our world are that they are the sinners within our world, NOT THE LEADERS OF OUR CHURCHES! These poor and unwed mothers are not the wolves in sheep clothing that the Catholic Church knew were the wolves and where the Church protected these wolves.
Do you know what God’s word say about such things as these priest wolves in sheep clothing? OBVIOUSLY NOT! Let me share it with you:

RE: IMMORALITY IN THE CHURCH
1 Corinthians Chapter 5
Now, it is actually being said that there is sexual immorality among you so terrible that not even the heathen would be guilty of it. I am told that a man is sleeping with his stepmother! How then, can you be proud? On the contrary, you should be filled with sadness, and the man who has done such a thing should be EXPELLED FROM YOUR FELLOWSHIP. And even though I am far away from you in body, still I am there with you in spirit; and as though I were there with you, I have in the name of our Lord Jesus already passed judgment on the man who has done this terrible thing. As you meet together, and I meet with you in my spirit, by the power of our Lord Jesus present with us, YOU ARE TO HAND THIS MAN OVER TO SATAN FOR HIS BODY TO BE DESTROYED, SO THAT HIS SPIRIT MAY BE SAVED IN THE DAY OF THE LORD!
It is not right for you to be proud! You know the saying, “A little bit of yeast makes the whole batch of dough rise. You must remove the old yeast of sin so that you will be entirely pure. Then you will be like a new batch of dough without any yeast, as indeed I know you actually are. For our Passover Festival is ready, now that Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Let us celebrate our Passover, then, not with bread having the old yeast of sin and wickedness, but with the bread that has no yeast, the bread of purity and truth. In the letter that I wrote you I told you not to associate with immoral people. Now I did not mean pagans who are immoral or greedy or are thieves, or who worship idols. To avoid them you would have to get out of the world completely.
WHAT I MEANT WAS THAT YOU SHOULD NOT ASSOCIATE WITH A PERSON WHO CALLS HIMSELF A BELIEVER BUT IS IMMORAL OR GREEDY OR WORSHIPS IDOLS OR IS A SLANDERER OR A DRUNKARD OR A THEIF. Don’t even sit down to eat with such a person. AFTER ALL, IT IS NONE OF MY BUSINESS TO JUDGE OUTSIDERS. GOD WILL JUDGE THEM. BUT SHOULD YOU NOT JUDGE THE MEMBERS OF YOUR OWN FELLOWSHIP. AS THE SCRIPTURE SAYS, “REMOVE THE EVIL PERSON FROM YOUR GROUP.”
————————————————————————
Tim, this is what God’s word says about such matters, not me. Are you calling me a hypocrite for my belief in every word of it? In fact, please stop responding to me of your own mind, but from now on back up your views with God’s Word, is that fair enough?
