…It occurred to me…

Special to the Post-Dispatch

I was reading the Qu’ran, and I came across this,

“And do good unto [thy] parents. Should one of them, or both, attain to old age in thy care, never say “Ugh” to them, but [always] speak unto them with reverent speech, and spread over them the wings of thy tenderness…”

Upon reading this, I came to understand that it is indeed important to treat our parents with respect and dignity.

I myself have not always given my parents all the respect they deserve. Our parents sacrifice so much for us to be here today. Even though they have their moments, there is always a good explanation behind them. I believe we should always respect our parents and do our jobs as the offsprings!

New anti-Islam film and new report on “Islamophobes”

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the weeks leading up to national elections have become fraught for American Muslims.

2008 is no different.

In 2006, a movie called “Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against The West” made the rounds and made American Muslims nervous. “Obsession” was recently distributed to an estimated 28 million people via 70 American newspapers, primarily in states crucial to next month’s presidential election.

In 2006, we reported that “Obsession”,

…was made by Honest Reporting, “a grass - roots movement dedicated to ensuring that Israel receives fair media coverage,” according to its website. Honest Reporting is an arm of Aish HaTorah, an orthodox Jewish education network based in Jerusalem.

Now, the same company is screening its new movie, “The Third Jihad,” in Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, New York, Texas and Utah. According to its website, the movie includes interviews with:

Rudy Giuliani, Clinton CIA Director Jim Woolsey, NYC Police Commissioner…

Muslim youth honors veterans at Jefferson Barrack Veterans Hospital

Special to the Post-Dispatch

Many of us probably spent Sunday of the Memorial Day weekend with friends over a BBQ lunch. That is exactly what I did yesterday, but it was especially exciting. At 10 am on Sunday I was on my way to Building 52 of the Jefferson Barracks VA hospital to meet with friends that make up the heart and muscles of MCS.

Muslim community at the VA

MCS stands for the ambitious name Muslim Community of St. Louis. For the second year in a row, that group held gratitude Memorial Day weekend lunch for our veterans who were spending the festive weekend away from home, and in extended care and rehabilitation facilities of the VA hospital.

youth serving mealsMCS is the brain child of a group of St. Louis Muslims who wanted to a start community service group that reaches out to whomever may need them in St. Louis, Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

During the early organizational meetings, two main objectives…

“Why do Muslims vote Democrat?”

Special to the Post-Dispatch

A reader (Centrist) commented on my first posting asking 2 questions. I answered the first question last week. The second question was as follows:

“… why do Muslims vote Democrat. The Democrats support abortion on demand and gay marriage, two things that the Muslim religion is so opposed to.”

I do not know how accurate it is to generalize in absolute terms that Muslims vote Democrat. But judging from my immediate circles, I would say a lot of them vote that way. I am aware of at least few Muslims that are hard-core republicans who are active in the party, and are fund raising for it. I admit, they are in the minority among the Muslims I know. As for those Muslims who vote Democrat, they do it for predominantly the same reasons that non-Muslim vote Democrat.

Social justice and collective social responsibility has been a pillar concept of the Muslim community since the birth…
