Royal Opera House jumps on the HD bandwagon

Post-Dispatch Classical Music

To the Met, La Scala and San Francisco, add yet another convert to the HD broadcast faith: The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

The ROH has announced that it will broad four (prerecorded, a la La Scala and the SFO) ballets and an opera. The ballets are “Sylvia” (March 30), “Romeo & Juliet”(May 24), “The Tales of Beatrix Potter” (June 7) and “Sleeping Beauty” (June 21).

The lone opera is Bizet’s “Carmen,” starring Italian soprano Anna Caterina Antonacci (April 19).

That bandwagon is getting pretty full. At least the ballets offer something new to the mix, and the schedule generally extends the season, rather than crowding it still further. (And none of ROH’s productions stars Angela Gheorghiu…)
