SLSO: A change in the horn section?

Post-Dispatch Classical Music

Just in: a report that St. Louis Symphony Orchestra assistant principal horn Larry Strieby is giving up that post.

He’s not leaving the orchestra, but he will give up the responsibilities of assistant principal for the job of utility horn. Given that the SLSO doesn’t have a principal horn at present, and that Strieby has been filling in on a frequent basis, that’s major news.

Strieby’s a veteran, on an instrument that usually gets harder to play with increasing age. In fact, he’s a member of the dwindling cadre that came with the SLSO to Powell Symphony Hall from the Kiel Opera House, more than 40 years ago.

No one from the SLSO was available to confirm or deny the report on Thursday.
