OTSL: another critic heard from

Post-Dispatch Classical Music

Hitting print too late to be included in Sunday’s roundup of other critics’ opinions of the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis season just ended was Heidi Waleson’s review for The Wall Street Journal.

Published in the weekend edition of July 5-6, Waleson wrote at greatest length about the production of William Walton’s Troilus and Cressida, which she called “a real find.”

Waleson liked Stephen Lawless’s directing (except for the conclusion) and Antony Walker’s conducting. “The star of the show was Ellie Dehn as Cressida, a charismatic soprano with great stage presence and a voice combining metallic clarity and sensual richness.” Also on Waleson’s list: Roger Honeywell’s Troilus, Robert Breault’s Pandarus and Elizabeth Batton’s Evadne.

She enjoyed the Doucet-Barbe The Tales of Hoffmann, but not Chas Rader-Shieber’s Una Cosa Rara: “concept run amok.” And she seems to have skipped Madame Butterfly.
