SLSO, SLCC recordings get international notice
The St. Louis Chamber Chorus’ latest recording, “Saint Louis Commissions,” has won widespread recognition for the locally-based a cappella choir. Along with a review in the Post-Dispatch, the disc has been favorably reviewed by the International Record Review, American Record Guide, MusicWeb International and – most notably – by The Gramophone, the respected British music magazine.
Gramophone’s critic wrote, among other things, that the CD is “A mostly beguiling collection of works commissioned by this superb choir. The Saint Louis Chamber Chorus sing with polish and a full, well balanced tone throughout, caught in splendid sound.”
Meanwhile, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra’s first set of four posthumously released discs with its former music director, the late Hans Vonk, won the Netherlands’ Edison Award (the Dutch equivalent of the Grammies) in the “Special Historical Recording” category for 2008.
The CDs include Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 and Brahms’ Symphony No. 4; an all-French disc with works by Debussy, Ravel and Roussel; Messiaen’s Turangalîla-symphonie; and Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4.
Vonk died in 2004 of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Another four discs will be released this fall.
