Tune-up time for choirs
“Think your church choir is heavenly?” asks a news release from Verizon Wireless.
The cell phone company is offering church choirs from around the country to enter its “first nationwide” competition, “How Sweet the Sound.”
Here’s the scoop: “Choirs interested in a chance to perform on-stage in the regional competition in St. Louis on September 13, must submit a five-minute audition video either online or by mail no later than July 25. The winning choirs from each region will head to the grand finale to compete for the $25,000 national prize in November.”
No word on ages or preferred styles, but this is something that could perk up the summer no-choir-rehearsal doldrums.

Interesting. No word on preferred styles. Hmm. I wonder if therein lies the rub. On the website, in one place, it says: “How Sweet the Sound™ is a Gospel Celebration in search of the best church choirs in America.”
But where it says who can participate, it says: “Any Choir that is or is affiliated with a church or church organization with a tax-exempt ID number.”
I hope Verizon won’t exclude certain/other styles. Perhaps they should be more explicit.
Thanks for the info, Bryan!
