Chris Carpenter to throw off mound Tuesday; rotation adjustments
Joe Strauss brings us the following update:
With Chris Carpenter scheduled to throw from a mound today for the first time since injuring his oblique, the club has bumped No. 5 starter Mitchell Boggs’ next start to Thursday’s series finale against the Pirates. Boggs’ turn on normal rest fell on Monday. Moving Boggs to Thursday allows Todd Wellemeyer and Joel Pineiro to remain on regular rest while giving Kyle Lohse and Adam Wainwright an extra day.
Because of an off day May 18, the Cardinals will next need a fifth starter May 23, a possible return date for Carpenter against the Kansas City Royals.
La Russa plans to retain 13 pitchers at least through the Pirates series. Infielder Brendan Ryan is eligible to leave the disabled list Friday.

I can live with that, although I’m beginning to wish, with the way pitching staffs are constructed these days, that MLB would raise the roster limit to 27 or 28 players.
We do have 3 days off between now and May 29, which is OK - but after that we’re going to have another ridiculous stretch of 35 games in 36 days; after May 29 we have exactly one scheduled off day (June 15) between May 29 and July 6.
I don’t know who wrote this schedule, but he/she ought to be shot - or at least strapped to a chair and forced to listen to Ron Santo.
The schedule stupidity has been compounded by ownership/commissioner (they’r the same now anyway) greed. Extended playoffs to get more tv/gate revenue makes the season longer, so fewer off days. Can’t have the two-for-one family friendly double-headers any more, so those games have to be played on what could be off days. I’m with you on the “add a roster spot or two” proposal, but greed will kill that as well; ownership won’t pay even minimum salaries for the extra pitchers/players. Sad.
The schedule used to be done by hand by an old couple in New England. Seriously. Since the advent of inter-league play it has been done by computers and it has been crap.
I hate having 14 pitchers. It’s tough to claim that the NL is the more challenging of the two leagues when you have 2 guys on your bench, plus a catcher you can’t use.
MLB is the most mismanaged of the big 4 U.S. sports. The schedule is just one example among many of the mismanagement. I will never forgive (or forget) the commish for PROMISING us a late-night playoff start would “never happen again” and then did it to us again right away. He lost the scintilla of credibility he’d retained until then.
The schedule is a jumbled mess because of the World Baseball Classic. They should start that a week earlier instead of the season a week later.
The commissioner lost all credibility when he woke up and his name was Bud Selig. Worst commissioner in the history of the sport…or at least, in my lifetime anyway. Steroids? What steroids? Conflict of interest? What conflict of interest? You mean I can’t own a team and be the commissioner at the same time? Apparently, you can and Bud showed us how.
Now if I can just find that 300 million I tucked under my pillow I could buy a MLB team and have half the equation satisfied. And seeing as they’ll let any idiot be the commissioner…well, um…I guess I’m not qualified…1 out of 2 works for me.
I may be in the minority but, personally I would get rid of the All Star game counting towards the winner being home team.
The other thing I wish MLB would do is get rid of this interleague play. It takes part of the fun away from the world series but, the main thing I hate about it is uneven games being played against all teams. It should be equal and it’s not. Example One team may play the best team in the AL and another one may be playing the weakest team in the league. You lose by a game and tell me that is fair. Or you play some teams very seldom in your division. All things should be equal in who the teams play.
Glad to hear the plans for Carp throwing off a mound on Tuesday are going forward. Hopefully, he’ll be back soon because this team is currently lacking a true #1 and badly needs an anchor to settle it.
I agree about increasing the roster by 2 or 3. In this day and age with pitchers being limited in the number of innings they can pitch and the high rate of injury, teams need to be able to carry more pitchers. I don’t like it that Tony is carrying 13 pitchers, leaving the team with a short bench, but I can see why he’s doing it with Carp out.
Given the length of the season, the number of games, and the number of teams and divisions, I don’t think it’s possible to create a schedule that works well for everyone. MLB definitely needs to get some software geniuses on it to see if they can come up with a better program. I agree though, that one good way to help improve the fairness of the schedule would be to get rid of interleague play. The Cards play the same teams every year–Detroit and KC. Doesn’t it kind of ruin the point of interleague play if you see the same teams year in and year out?
One of the Cardinals relievers agreed with having the extra arm in the bullpen, helping to keep everyone fresh. Having an extra roster spot or two would be a welcome thing for MLB. But, anything that actually makes sense for MLB, never has the chance to grow legs. Sad.
