Carpenter gets rare support
CINCINNATI _ Righthander Chris Carpenter had received an average of just 3.1 runs per game of support from his St. Louis Cardinals’ teammates, so today’s output of eight while Carpenter was in the game was rare largesse.
Carpenter even drove in one of the runs himself with a single as the Cardinals jumped to an 8-0 lead the Cincinnati Reds after five innings. Colby Rasmus hit his second homer in two games and doubled to help set up another scoring inning.
Carpenter worked seven innings, giving up just one run and five hits.

I’m not a TLR hater by any means (how could anyone here be?), but I was so irritated when he had Rasmus sacrificing in the top of the first. I’m so glad the sacrifice DIDN’T work, because who knows how else this game would have turned out without that early 2-0 lead to take the pressure of off both Carpenter and the usually dismal offense (apart from Pujols, of course). There is no way our second-best hitter should be sacrificing in that spot, especially when they would just walk Pujols and set up a double play, putting more pressure on our struggling 4 and 5 hitters.
Anyway, I agree that it was nice to see some run support for Carpenter (it helps that they were facing Arroyo and not another Cy Young winner). It was also nice to see Carpenter shake of Tuesday’s sub-par outing against the Giants.
