DeRosa headed to DL
Mark DeRosa, whom the Cardinals acquired in a trade with Cleveland just more than two weeks ago, is headed to the 15-day disabled list with a left wrist strain. DeRosa, who played just three games with the Cardinals before injuring the wrist, was initially thought to be rejoining the Cardinals in Milwaukee tonight for the start of a three-game series. However, after an examination of the wrist on Monday, the team announced this afternoon that he will be moved to the disabled list, retroactive to July 1.
Just yesterday DeRosa said, “I’d love to be able to contribute, but it’s out of my control right now.”
In corresponding moves, the Cardinals have recalled infielder Brian Barden and outfielder Nick Stavinoha from Class AAA Memphis. The Cardinals optioned infielder Tyler Greene to Memphis on Monday.
Starting pitcher Kyle Lohse (right forearm flexor strain) is slated to make a rehab start tonight for Memphis. The team is hopeful Lohse will return to the Cardinals for this weekend’s series against the Chicago Cubs.

Unfortunately I think this is the right move. More caution needs to be taken with wrist injuries, and with Barden and Stavinoha recalled hopefully that will give a boost to this struggling offense.
Stupid, stupid, stupid!!!
Why is the Cards medical staff & powers-that-be that decide what to do w/injured players so f’ing stupid!
Coulda put him on the Dl lot sooner than this, imo. Now, he won’t even be available that 1st weekend series after the All-Star break.
AND, if we would’ve acted sooner, we could have had him for the Cub series this weekend, no?
Come on, guys. Get your acts together. Stupid! Why you so stupid!! Argh.
Mike, it’s retroactive to july 1st. he’ll be eliglbe to come back the Thursday after the all star game. Smart move.
Hey Mike S., the front office/medical staff may look stupid at times, but this time, you do. It says he is on the DL retroactive to July 1, which means he can come back July 16th if ready. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Mike S., the move to the DL is retroactive to the last date he appeared in a game. Waiting will not affect when he becomes available in the least, not even by one day. Now who’s stupid, stupid, stupid??
Mike S, the DL placement is retroactive to July 1, so therefore DeRosa can comeback on the 15th, he would be available the first series after the All-Star break, relax!
Hey Mike, before you go off the deep end, be aware you can backdate the DL from the day of the 1st missed game. Have a clue.
Mike…..
UMMMMM….NO. Since he hasn’t played since the injury, his DL time will start on 7/1. That’s what retroactive means.
The move was made retroactive to July 1st. He will be available for the first game back on the 16th, before the first game back from the All-Star break.
lol….I think the point got made.
And BTW, just for anyone else who might be wondering, putting him on the DL sooner also would not mean his wrist would be healed any sooner. So if he was going to able to play this weekend, they would not have put him on the DL at all, they would have made it for another three days with 1 less available position player, just like they have been doing.
O.K., my friend Ry-guy just told me it’s retro-active.
I’m chilled out now.
The trip to the DL is retroactive to July 1, which is the day after he got hurt. Even if he went on the DL right away it would have been the same day, July 1. Making him ineligible to play the weekend series with the Cubs. He is eligible to come of the DL on Thursday July 16 wich will make him available for the first series after the break. And remember, the Cardinals get an extra day after the break.
And thanks to all whom made me aware of that on here as well.
Much obliged.
Mike S. - Why is the Cardinals medical staff stupid here? He’s hasn’t played in a game since the injury, so the 15 day disabled list can be backdated to the day after he got hurt. Which means his stint can be retroactive to July 1. So if I add 15 days, he’s back in time for the Arizona series on the 17th.
There is no way we would have had him for the Cubs series this weekend, even if we had put him on the DL the day we traded for him! He’s only been with the team since the 28th of June.
Maybe you should learn how the DL works before going o
Mike,
Why do you think he would’ve been available to play against the Cubs this weekend. That series is not fifteen days beyond the date he was hurt plus who knows if he would’ve been healthy by then anyway? Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Hey Mike S,
Any idea when he can come of the DL? Just thought you were the one to ask.
What is up with this’ teams medical staff? There seems to be more indecision and second guessing about player’s injuries than accurate diagnoses, prognoses and treatment going on with Cardinal players than other teams. Any chance Troy Glaus will play an inning this year?
And yes, all on here are right. I jumped to conclusions, didn’t read the post fully, and cleary did look stupid, stupid, stupid. So I’ll admit that, tip my cap, and admit defeat.
I’m usually better than that on here.
Does anyone know if this is retroactive to July 1st? I mean, isn’t it kind of stupid to wait until now to make the decision? I wish there was somewhere I could go to get information on this move and the effect it has on his return since they waited. If only…
Mike S -
You are the stupid one. The DL move is retroactive to July 1, meaning he comes back July 16.
Mike S.: Stupid, stupid, stupid. Here is a little baseball DL lesson.
1. The move is retroactive to July 1st. Since he played on June 30th, if they put him on the DL right after he got hurt, it would have been as of July 1st. So no difference there.
2. It is a 15 Day DL, so he WILL be avaialable to come off the DL right after the All-Star break.
Summary of Lesson: If they would have put him on the DL right after he got hurt, the ONLY difference would have been the presence on the bench of Stavinoha or Barden (not that big of a deal).
And another thing, the Cardinals have gone 4-1, since his injury, I bet you didn’t know that did you.
So, before you go start calling people stupid, not what the f*** you’re are talking about.
**tweet** 15 yard penalty..piling on.
It’s a shame, though. How much more bad luck can this team have? With Lohse coming back and some key players (Ludwick) starting to pick it up, hopefully they can put together some wins in the second half. This division is just waiting for someone to take charge.
Yeah Matt N, I was just too quick to start b!tch!ng. I know how the DL works. I know you can apply that retro-active stipulation to it. Just wasn’t thinking clearly. Was just reacting. And I wasn’t really doing the math in my head as far as when we had acquired him when I went off on my tingent.
So, point taken.
What has changed? The info yesterday was that he was feeling better and going to play tonight.
I got news for everyone!! He aint coming back this year!!!
Thanks netboy, but, I prob deserve it, so, it’s cool.
I’ve learned an important online lesson today, so something good did come out of this.
Mike S.- Cardinals fans are the smartest fans in baseball. We’ll allow you to keep rooting for the team, but you’ll need to redeem yourself with a written assignment.
Please have prepared (by the end of the week) a short essay on each of the following subjects.
1) Rules for 15 and 60 day DL (w/effects on 25 and 40 man rosters)
2) Rule V draft rules (and which Cardinals will be eligible next year)
3) Explain the double switch and it’s proper uses. (Please use examples from this season)

Please turn in all work to the comments section of the birdland blog ASAP.
WHAT THE F***??
There goes the season. No possible way we’re getting another ”impact” bat.
I think I read somewhere that the move to the DL was retroactive to the 1st. FYI
Just another day in the life of a Cardinal fan! Waiting on another player with signifigant importance to come back from injury! Im gonna look at this situation this way! Its alomost like we never had him! He never got a hit, never did anything to contribute besides make that catch when they were down 4 runs!! Didnt give up much, Perez is a dough boy with one pitch! Im not counting on DeRosa, Glaus, or K. Greene this year at all! And they’re all gonna leave anyway so we should just wash our hands with these guys! It just seems like another cruel joke on the fans!!!
Relax folks. He’s only going to miss 7 more games than expected, although important ones against the Brewers and Cubs. At least Stav is back, and may take the bat out of Duncan’s hands for a little while. Let’s just hope DeRosa is healthy come the 17th.
The timing of this sucks. Fortunately the offense looked decent in the Cincy series without DeRo. Granted, we won’t be facing garbage pitchers like Arroyo in the next couple games, but we can find ways to win while we DeRo’s wrist heals. From my point of view, this is a total cautionary move. The point has been VERY well made that the move is retroactive to July 1, so rather than waste a spot on the bench during these HUGE series coming up, they decided to bring up some guys that Tony can stick in the lineup without fear of re-injury. This development is not very fun, but I think it’s smart.
I applaud Mike S. for taking his oral beatdown like a man. That being said I would like to see him finish that homework assignment.
It seems to always happen this way. The Cardinals will put out an announcement saying everything will be okay and (said player) will be back in just a few days of being on the DL. Could Mark DeRosa be following Troy Glaus’ lead - just a string of bad luck, and yes, there goes the impact bat to complement Albert. Perhaps we can try for Matt Holliday, I can think of a few players needed for that trade; hmmm, a few of them are now in the outfield.
Mr. S,
It appears as though the move is retroactive to July 1.
Yours in jumping from the PSB,
JPinSTL
Im sure they will use a retroactive date on this. He will be back 1st game after the All-Star break.
Argh.
Dammit Don F. & andystl, I hate homework. I don’t wanna do it. Whah!
But, this may be deemed a proper punishment, so, I’ll sleep on it
Unless Mathew Ringhofer (see above) has some source of info nobody else knows about, ignore his comment. I am fairly confident we’ll be seeing DeRosa back soon after the All-Star break, and I hope he is hitting better than before he got hurt.
Finally, Greene gets sent down. He hasn’t been playing very well lately. Hopefully Barden can give Thurston some rest. I think he needs it, and he needs to study the art of baserunning! I do like how he hustles though, just a little too aggressive sometimes.
Now if we could only send Duncan and Ankiel down to get their strokes back as well. But we all know that’s not going to happen to the “Teacher’s Pets”! I still don’t understand why Ankiel wasn’t sent down on a rehab assignment, and Ludwick too for that matter. At least Ludwick is starting to heat back up. I’m not quite sure what Rasmus has to do to get playing time over these two washed up “power” hitters. The kid has the moxy to be an everyday player at this level, and so far he has proven it eventhough he’s not playing everyday! It’s ridiculous that Duncan has more at-bats than this kid considering he’s been hovering around the Mendoza line for the last two months! Where are all the “Duncan’s power is back” people at? So much for all that talk of 30 HR’s and 100 RBI’s. I don’t know that he’ll make it to 15 & 75!!!
But whomever re-posted my initial rant, well boo to you!
That’s a low-blow.
DOES the front office ever tell the truth?????????
Mike S just prooves that he is a passionate cardinal fan and there is nothing wrong with that. Give the guy a break wiil ya!
What is a tingent?
Mike S.:
It’s okay; read the announcement. The DL is retroactive to July 1, which is the last time DeRosa played. That is standard DL stuff; they always make it retroactive to the last game he played. No, not stupid. They’re doing their job. We have an injury. It’ll be okay.
For those that are happy about Greene going down and Stavi and Barden coming up, here is a little info:
Barden batted .238 with four home runs and 10 RBIs in 51 games for the Cardinals this season, earning top NL rookie honors in April. Stavinoha batted .234 with one homer and 13 RBIs in 27 games with St. Louis this season.
Let’s hope Ankiel, Duncan, Ludwick, and Thurston heat up for the next week(I think 2 of them could be realistic).
why would we not send down Thurston?! he’s terrible… great April, but what have you done for me lately (besides lead the team in errors and base running mistakes).
IMO it sometimes takes a while for idiots to understand
what m.st people pick up right away
It’s beginning to appear that the Cardinals are jinxed at the third base position???
I would feel sorry for you Mike S. but no, no i dont, you are the stupid one
Now where are all the people who hounded Mo to aquire this guy? Where’s Miklasz and the radio talk show knuckleheads? He’s a career .280 hitter, who’s batting 10 points below his average. He strikes out twice as many times as he walks. He is O for St. Louis, and the Birds didn’t win a game with him in the lineup. Now he’s hurt and missing the two most important series of the season so far. The very series the Cardinals acquired him to be a part of. Could it be he’s not what everyone built him up to be? I think that’s the case. I won’t miss him.
I don’t need a pity party.
I broke one of my own online rules-never to post comments on a posting w/out reading in its entirety. Seen this happen so many times to others, so I get it.
Never again.
I don’t see the big deal. We’re in first place right now, the Brewers and Cubs are panicking, and the Cardinals are only going to get more healthy down the stretch.
Well, the original poster is right in one regard. We played a man down against the Reds because the diagnosis was not made quickly enough. Could have used Stavinoha as a pinch hitter in the game we lost.
Is this move retroactive?
It is just too bad that DeRosa has to sit out for 15 days. What is going to happen next to the Cardinals, perhaps the Brewers or Cubs will hit Pujols on the writs and knock him out.
Eric - admittedly I’m a Cubs fan who checked this article because I like DeRosa, but you should know that the Cubs aren’t panicking. They moved Soriano to the 6-hole because he’s not a true leadoff hitter and is having a crappy year. Bradley is having a crappy year, and so is Soto. Over the course of the year history tells us that Bradley and Soriano will hit. Soto most likely will, but he doesn’t have the history to prove it. Ramirez is back in the lineup and Lee is hitting lights out right now. The Cubs stayed 2 games out with their strongest hitter out of the lineup and 2 of their 4 strongest hitting like total crap.
They have a steady starting rotation that hasn’t had run support in some games, but the bats are now coming alive. Plus Jake Fox is hitting very well off the bench and will be used down the stretch to give Bradley, Soriano, Ramirez, and Lee days off. This lineup is just now hitting its stride - they are not panicking. 2 games out with an upcoming series against St. Louis and all of their heavy hitters and starting rotation healthy is exactly where they want to be.
jfmoyn - lets at least give the guy a fair shake. He didn’t TRY to injure his wrist. He is 0-9 against 3 really, really good pitchers. (Not to mention, that’s way too small of a sample size for anyone to be up in arms.)
He wants to play, he wants to help, he’s a stand up guy can hopefully come back to be an asset to the team in a lot of different ways. The guys still fits perfectly as a cardinal, its just really unfortunate timing to miss some big series’.
Was DeRosa healthy when we got him ???????
We shoulda known better. DeRosa is 34 yrs old and just isn’t the same since he stopped the ‘roids.
Isn’t that what Edmonds did as soon as we traded him the SF?
Yeah. Jimmy was a user too. That’s why he broke down completely when he hit the wall.
Birdflu,
My complaint is not with DeRosa, I’m sure he wants to contribute. What I’m saying is that there was a considerable amount of DeRosa worship among fans and media before he got here. Those people have been mum since his arrival. Even if he is healthy, he’s still just a utility guy with average numbers who shouldn’t be counted on to propel a team to a championship. I just don’t think he’ll be missed.
I am sorry to hear this about DeRosa. Less than three games, no hits, and an injury. Hopefully, he will indeed be ready to go after the ASB. But why is Thurston still on this team? Surely, there has to be a better alternative. Barden could be an alternative, but Thurston should be gone. He’s not hitting, he’s made major base running mistakes, and his defense has been generally atrocious. Not turning double plays in New York a couple of weeks ago? I couldn’t believe that — and two games in a row, as I recall. It’s unfortunate, but we can now see why he hadn’t made it in the majors before. Enough
I was going to post a responce to this article but I stubbed my finger on the “F” key and will be out for about 15 days. OOOOOooooooCCCCHHHHH…
[bunchaoverpaidmadeoutaglasspansies]
DeRosa - when healthy - is a better 3B than anyone playing there for the Cards now. Joe Thurston is not a starter and really only a borderline utility guy. he fields but can’t hit a lick. He stays only long enough to get DeRosa healthy. Tyler Greene and Brendan Ryan can fill the utility roles. Joe has got to go.
Let’s make some more room and send down Duncan & Thurston. Surely we can get better options. What is it with DeRosa & Lohse? Sure wish we could get the wrists healed up. I really hope we can Glaus back. Outfield: Rasmus, Ludwick, Ankiel / Shoemacher…..infield, Pujols, Brendan Ryan / DeRosa at 2nd or short, & DeRosa or Glaus at 3rd when they get back. I think we could make some noise that way.
jfmoyn — this is the dumbest post in a long thread of dumb, dumb posts. I can’t understand what you’re even complaining about. You’re pissed at DeRosa for getting hurt? At the front office for acquiring a player who later got hurt? At people who liked the trade … for staying silent??? What the heck are you talking about?
And Thurston must go. He’s killed innings, contributed significantly to lost games, and really, done nothing at all to help. I’ll take Barden hitting .220, that’s an improvement.
Duncan and wellemeyer for Cliff Lee. And then get Freddie Sanchez to play 2B. (should have signed Felipe Lopez…)
Baseball players are such wimps. These guys take off with an infected pimple. Why not? They get paid either way. And what’s with those necklaces? Women wear jewelry like that. And EVERY one of them has one on. They should be testing these guys for female hormones as well as steroids.
KMac, what are you smoking? Seriously that must be some good stuff. What on earth makes you think Cleveland would take that deal. I can’t believe I just responded to that ignorance.
Geez, there’s no way the Indians are going to trade Cliff Lee for Duncan and Wellemeyer? Would you make that trade if you were Mark Shapiro? Some of the trade ideas thrown out on here are just ludicrous.
As for the DeRosa trade supporters “staying mum,” what would you like us to say? I like the DeRosa trade and still do if he can come back after the ASB. I’m just sitting and waiting for his wrist to get better like everyone else. Would you like for us to post that on a daily basis? Okay, I hope DeRosa’s wrist gets better soon, I hope DeRosa’s wrist gets better soon, I hope DeRosa’s wrist gets better soon. There, DeRosa trade supporters no longer “mum”.
Did anyone here see the video of DeRosa’s injury. There was no indication that he was hurt that I saw. Maybe someone has posted this already, but I’m tired of reading about “mike s’s” minor mistake. Anyway does anyone think he may have been hurt prior to the trade. This is why Cleveland wanted to make something happen before his value decreased. Unbelievable. I sure hope he can make a contribution. I liked this trade but am losing trust and respect for Mo. His trade seem good but keep blowing up in his face a bit. Maybe this is some kind of new GM hazing.
To jfmoyn:
I’ll gladly own up to the fact that I was one of those who urged the trade for DeRosa. I don’t think anything I said would qualify as “DeRosa worship,” however. I said at the time that I believe — and still do — that he will provide flexibility, and that he brings a right-handed bat that still has some power in it. I’m also sure that no one is more frustrated than Mark DeRosa with this turn of events. Despite this setback, I stand by my original comments, and I believe he will still provide a significant contribution. I believe I also offered the opinion at the time that the Cards will need to add more than DeRosa (that elusive “impact” bat, for example?) to make a sustained run over the long haul. I still feel that to be the case. But, stranger things have happened. If Ryan Ludwick can get his legs into shape, he might be able to pull it off. However, I also think he’s a player who needs to play every day, in order to keep his edge. And, therein, may lie the rub.
If you Cardinal fans are so smart and wonderful why are you so happy that the Cardinals have been playing short handed since July 1?
suckitup Quote - “And what’s with those necklaces? Women wear jewelry like that. And EVERY one of them has one on. They should be testing these guys for female hormones as well as steroids.”
Actually, I believe it was a female hormonal drug that they nabbed Manny Ramirez. hCG - a women’s fertility drug typically used by steroid users to restart their body’s natural testosterone production as they come off a steroid cycle.
So I guess they are testing for it suckitup and catching them for it. It just seems they may be using it for a reason different than the one you insinuated.
Mike in Cali,
I think it’s a valid point. For weeks columnists, sports talk show hosts and announcers impatiently called for a DeRosa trade. They got it and now that he can’t contribute, they preach patience. For my part, I’m just a bit frustrated with all these sports know-it-alls calling for moves just for the sake of a move. If you think I’m being dumb or petty, fine, just read my post and move on. Don’t get so upset. I thought you people from Cali were more layed back.
“AND, if we would’ve acted sooner, we could have had him for the Cub series this weekend, no?
Come on, guys. Get your acts together. Stupid! Why you so stupid!! Argh.
— Mike S.
12:47 pm July 7th, 2009 ”
I think it’s damn selfish of DeRosa for not getting hurt a week earlier so he could be back to play against the Cubs!
I guess if we would have “acted sooner” he would be healed now?!?
For all You worriers, stop whining..This has to be done, to make sure we have a healthy DEROSA after the break..Yeh, I would have loved to see him against the Cubs, but Not to be right now..What we really need is for ANKIEL,DUNCAN AND LUDWICK step up and play ball..The next 2 series will define our season..Brewers and Cubs are chomping at the bit to bury the CARDS..It’s up to our pitchers and offense to stop it..GO CARDS
jfmoyn - you’re right. I should be calmer. Sorry for getting agitated. But nobody painted the DeRosa trade as getting anything more than what he was: someone who can play third (and other positions) and a guy with 50 RBI (that would make him second on the team to Albert) and some power, and a good guy in the clubhouse (ask the Cubs). Even those who loved the trade said “we still need the big outfield bat.” Now maybe that’s gonna be a rejuvenated Ludwick, or somebody else, but I don’t think you can fault the front office or the fans for being unrealistic about the DeRosa trade. It was a very very smart move. If he’s hurt, he’s hurt, what can you do? He doesn’t have a history of getting hurt a lot so we’ll just wait for him to give us a solid second half after he gets back.
i have 2 words…….
BRETT WALLACE!
jfmoyn and Mike in Cali-
What other choice do we have other than to be patient? I think it would be foolish for Mo to make another big splash before we know how DeRo is going to fit here. Patience is the only option. Let’s face it, even if DeRo was out for 3-4 weeks, Mo probably wouldn’t have made another impact move anyway. Let’s hope for the best in these next 7 games and once DeRosa’s back, we’ll see what we’ve got. Long season.
Cardinals knew they could retro this and with the break coming it doesn’t hurt us that bad.
Holy comments, Batman… lol.
This certainly is a disappointment, but before anybody jumps out of a window, take a moment for rational thought. I don’t have access to the stats in front of me, but I’m pretty sure the NL Central hasn’t been locked up until after the All-Star break for most of the last 5 years.
It sucks to see DeRosa go on the DL, but in the grand scheme of things I’d rather see the club take the time, let him rest, let him heal. This way we get a 100% healthy DeRosa back from the injury, rather then rusing him back and having him deal with a nagging injury and never quite get back to where he should be. Good move, in my opinion.
I understand all the frustration, but nobody’s running away with the NL Central. Take a deep breath, relax, and GO CARDS!!!
Okay, okay…we’ll throw in Thurston along with Duncan and Wellemeyer to get Cliff Lee.
Navin Johnson - the new phone books are here!
Is it too late to get Scott Rolen back???? Just wondering….
Hey Mark S., if you would do your homework, you would see that the retroactive date is July 1, right after this happened. If my college education math is correct, this makes Mark D eligible to play again on the 16th of July. This is in time for the weekend series after the break with the Diamondbacks. I am not sure what you are griping about. GO CARDINALS AND #4!!!!!!!!
