Duke, Pena, Hoffman added to All-Star rosters
ST. LOUIS — Pittsburgh Pirates lefty Zach Duke and Milwaukee Brewers closer Trevor Hoffman, baseball’s all-time leader in saves, have been added to the National League All-Star Game roster to replace two injured players.
Los Angeles Dodgers closer Jonathan Broxton will miss the game because of an injured big toe on his right foot. San Francisco starter Matt Cain, one of the league’s ERA leaders, took a line drive off his elbow Saturday night and will not be able to pitch in Tuesday’s game. Major League Baseball announced the changes Sunday, shortly before the Futures Game at Busch Stadium.
Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia, the AL’s reigning MVP, will also miss the All-Star Game so that he can be with his wife, who reportedly been hospitalized this week with complications related to early labor. Tampa Bay first baseman Carlos Pena, the league’s leader in home runs, will replace Pedroia.
The 80th All-Star Game will be Tuesday at Busch.
