With the uncertainty surrounding the extent of infielder-outfielder Mark DeRosa’s left wrist injury suffered Tuesday night, the St. Louis Cardinals recalled second baseman Jarrett Hoffpauir from Class AAA Memphis and sent out righthander Clayton Mortensen, who allowed six runs in three innings in his major league debut on Monday.

The 26-year-old Hoffpauir, hitting .276,  will become the 15th rookie to play for the Cardinals this season and ninth to make his major-league debut. DeRosa reported to the park with a brace on his wrist but it was not immediately known how long he would be sidelined.

How can he be both recalled and making his major league debut?

If he has never played in a game, he hasn’t debuted.

His contract from Memphis was previously purchased by St. Louis, putting him on the 40 man roster (probably to protect him in the Rule 5 draft). He’s never played for St Louis, but his contract is owned by St. Louis so he was “recalled” off the 40 man roster onto the 25 man roster.

maybe some put on a hex on the ground around 3b…. Think about it….Someone needs to remove the hex with a ceremony or something…

It as if the 3rd base position has some sort of voodoo curse on it!

Frank, Wallace isn’t on the 40 man roster, where as Hoffpauir is.

I agree… Bring up Wallace! I remember a guy who replaced Booby Bonilla… Just bring him up. By accident he would do better than this Hoffpauir. Mark me down as one who just don’t understand!!

Can’t the big club purchase wallces contrat from memphis? Aside of finacial comcerns and how quick he can reach free agency does it really matter if the FO is tryin to win now?

I think we should start a “Wallace-Wallace” chant like in Braveheart at the stadium. How many scrubs can we put at 3rd base before the FO let’s the kid play at this level?

Many seem to think that Wallace is another Pujols. The odds against him making any sort of immediate impact is tremendous.

Wallace will not have to be protected from the Rule 5 draft this Winter unless he’s put on the 40 man roster. If he is brought up we will lose one more prospect in that draft. Since we have many prospects due to being exposed to that draft, it would be a serious error to bring him up unless they’re sure he’ll make a big difference.

Good point Bill, it’s easy for us fans to just call-up anybody on a whim but the organization has to do a little more homework. As for the “recalled” question earlier…yes that’s the term even for rookies making their debut. Is Hoffpauir related to the dude with the Cubs?
