Wellemeyer heads for DL
Cardinals righthander Todd Wellemeyer, who experienced some elbow inflammation when throwing in the outfield on Sunday in Pittsburgh, was placed on the 15-day disabled list this afternoon and righthander Mitchell Boggs, who was brought back from Class AAA Memphis on Monday, is taking Wellemeyer’s scheduled start tonight at Busch Stadium against the Cincinnati Reds.
The club has not made an official announcement yet, but Wellemeyer has the “on disabled list” asterisk next to his name on tonight’s press-box lineup sheet.
Mark DeRosa, who missed two starts because of upper back/neck discomfort, is back in the lineup at third base, and Julio Lugo, who was not in Monday’s lineup, will replace defensive whiz Brendan Ryan at shortstop tonight. Boggs is not known particularly as a ground-ball pitcher; also, it gives Ryan a chance to rest his tender left ankle.
Reds third baseman Scott Rolen, who has been having concussion issues after being hit in the head by a pitch some 10 days ago, also apparently has been placed on the DL as his name does not appear on the Reds’ card.
The Cardinals’ lineup:
Skip Schumaker 2b
Colby Rasmus cf
Albert Pujols 1b
Matt Holliday lf
Ryan Ludwick rf
Mark DeRosa 3b
Yadier Molina c
Julio Lugo ss
Mitchell Boggs p

Ooooo, daddy like…
I like the lineup. But really thing the pitcher should bat 8th today. Call it a gut feeling. Good day!
Chris-
Bat the pitcher 8th? are you serious? Please tell me you’re kidding.
Don’t wanna rain on anybody’s parade here or anything, but this whole Todd to the DL thing could not have came at a better time. Not Mitchell will get his just deserts and maybe steal away the number five slot this year and the number four for next season…
no weakness in that lineup. If we can hold the red under 6 runs we should win.
PREDICTION: Three (3) double-plays grounded into by Molina tonight.
superior lineup… colbys the man. when hes in the lineup, were bulletproof
Atten: John Hunt:
Your little prediction is not so bold. If you really wanna go out on a limb; predict ZERO doubleplays for Molina. That’s far less likely to happen than three…
Never like to see a player go to the DL, especially not on the home team. That being said, I hope some time off will allow Welle to regroup mentally and figure out why his results have been so poor this year. Also, pretty excited to see what Boggs can do now that it looks like the 5th spot in the rotation is his to lose for now. I really like this kid and I hope now that it looks like he’ll be here for a while, he can stop nibbling on the corners, throw strikes and let his ability take him deep into the ballgame.
I’m unhappy to see Lugo playing shortstop instead of Ryan. Ryan said he’s feeling much better on last night’s postgame show, so why not let him play tonight and tomorrow? He can rest on Thursday.
