Matt Holliday: I lost it in the lights

Matt Holliday, who dropped a fly ball by James Loney in the ninth with two outs to set in motion the Dodgers’ rally over the Cardinals, said he lost it in the lights at Dodger Stadium.

“I couldn’t see the ball. I lost in the lights.

“I had it in the beginning but then the ball came down through the lights and I lost it.

“When that happens, you hope it hits your body or hits your glove.

“I just lost it.

“Tough to swallow. I feel terrible.

“The ball hit my stomach. I think I can catch a fly ball hit right at me.

“Wainwright pitched a good game, the bullpen did its job. I just didn’t catch it.”

Holliday had homered for the Cardinals to give them a 1-0 lead earlier in the game.

It has been a rough series so far for the Cardinals’ big off-season acquisition. He struck out with the bases loaded in the first inning when St. Louis had a chance to break that game wide open. The Cards lost it, as well, and are now down 0-2.

Cardinals, Mo, spend your money on the bullpen, if Franklin had been lights out, no problem. How much of this should we blame on Franklin’s dead arm???

I blame this one on good ole Tony. He should’ve never left a closer who is struggling as much as he is in the game. He should’ve been yanked! Poor managing.

Let me just coin it: The Drop.

Seriously, does this sink the Cardinals chances, or even desire, to sign a deal with Holliday? If they sign him to eight years for $120 million, or whatever, and he starts 2010 like he did 2009 in Oakland, after The Drop, the fans are going to turn against him hard. Or if he has an injury-plagued season, same problem. This could get seriously ugly if he’s signed to a big contract.

For that matter, who thinks Holliday is going to want any part of staying in St. Louis, now, for any amount of money? Is he going to want to show up at the park every day to be reminded of October 8, 2009? He ought to tell Boras to sign a discounted deal with St. Louis, because he OWES this team and theses fans. But how many $100 million baseball players have courage like that? Nobody these days, except maybe Pujols. Holliday just wants to take the next limo out of town and never look back, probably to the American League East where he’ll almost never have to come to St. Louis.

Man, the replay shows the ball didn’t even hit his glove… Is this Holliday’s kharmic payback for The Slide?
