FORT MYERS, Fla. — St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Troy Glaus’ returned from his visit with the doctor who performed surgery on his right shoulder, and the doctor described Glaus’ recovery as “progressing,” according to general manager John Mozeliak.
Mozeliak added that the team trainers, officials and Glaus will meet to re-visit the schedule of Glaus’ rehab.
The third baseman had been steaming along through the first part of spring training, even expressing optimism that he would appear in a game before the major-league team headed north. In the past week, however, Glaus has ceased baseball activities and hit what has been described as a “plateau.” The meeting with Dr. Lewis Yocum in California was previously scheduled, but it came at a time that Glaus’ recovery had idled. Glaus advanced to the point where he was playing light catch and taking swings off a tee.
Glaus had surgery to cleanup his shoulder in January. There was no surturing or rebuilding work done.
In other news … lefty Royce Ring, who was placed on waivers this past week for the purpoes of outrighting him to the minors, has accepted an assignment to Class AAA Memphis. He will provide lefty depth for the Cardinals, who worked this winter to find suitable arms for a thin spot on their roster. Ring had a 11.12 ERA in seven appearances and 5 2/3 innings this spring in Grapefruit League play. He struck out five of the 27 batters he faced.
