Cardinals’ Carpenter: “If I had to pitch, I’d pitch”

JUPITER, Fla. _Chris Carpenter, who barely pitched the last two seasons because of arm problems, has been through much worse than a strained left calf muscle he sustained earlier this week.

“‘I’m not concerned about it. It’s getting better each day,” said the St. Louis Cardinals’ righthander who was scratched from a scheduled exhibition start Friday night in Memphis.

“If I had to pitch, I’d pitch,” Carpenter said. “I don’t think a Friday night game in Memphis after flying all day. .. why pitch and re-aggravate it? I don’t think anybody would be real happy wth that.”

Carpenter suffered the injury while running on Monday after taking a long bus ride back from Fort Myers, Fla., after he had pitched there on Sunday.

“It hurt pretty good (bad) on Monday,” said Carpenter. “I came in Tuesday and it was better, but as the day went along, it got worse. Two days ago, I couldn’t walk. I was limping. (On Wednesday) I came in and it felt better again and it felt pretty good all day. Again, today the same thing.”

Manager Tony La Russa said, “It’s better already. But, everything about Carp is a big deal because he’s a big deal to us.” .

A strained calf won’t DL him. I’ve done it a couple of times myself, and he will feel fine by the time Opening Day rolls around. He may want to avoid sprinting to beat out a grond ball, but other than that he’ll be fine.

Gotta love the 21st century double-speak. Thanks for the translation Commish!

“It hurt pretty good (bad) on Monday,” said Carpenter.

Carp will do great. He’s simply a beast and nothing less.

i hope the team is aware of DVT or deep vein thrombosis. this affects people after longish periods of inactivity, the most cited examples are plane rides. when i hear of a pulled muscle showing up right after a plane ride, warning bells go off.
