Cardinals place Brendan Ryan on DL
ATLANTA - The Cardinals placed infielder Brendan Ryan on the 15-day disabled list Thursday and promoted 2005 first-round draftee Tyler Greene to fill a growing void at shortstop.
Manager Tony La Russa acknowledged following Wednesday’s 5-3 win over the Atlanta Braves that a roster move was necessary since starting shortstop Khalil Greene will be unavailable for at least the first two games of the 4-game series against the Washington Nationals. Greene is suffering from a right forearm strain that makes it difficult for him to throw.
Ryan pulled up after running out a fifth-inning ground ball. He left the game and was diagnosed with a mild hamstring strain. La Russa said he would be out a minimum “5-7 days.” Given Khalil Greene’s condition, a move had to be made.
Tyler Greene is hitting .296 at Triple-A Memphis. Drafted as a college junior at Georgia Tech two picks behind Colby Rasmus, Greene also has contributed nine RBI and seven stolen bases in 71 at-bats. His 17 strikeouts are partly offset by a .412 on-base percentage. Greene fared well in spring training after being placed on the 40-man roster last November. He likely will become the Cardinals’ starting shortstop until Khalil Greene improves. A Texas League (AA) All-Star last summer, Tyler Greene, 25, arrives after taking only 182 at-bats total at Triple-A.

I’m very happy for Tyler Greene. He has worked hard and overcome some injuries and in-effectiveness to earn this call up. I am glad the team has not given up on him. This will be a very good oppotunity to get an early look at him to get a gauge on just how much he might be able to help the Cardinals in the future.
Is he the SS of the future? I don’t think anybody is ready to make that determination yet, but this “cup of coffee” in the big leagues will go a long way I think in getting an idea of what this guy is capable of in the Big Leagues.
What if Khalil becomes the Wally Pip of the 21st century? Tyler comes up and turns into the next Cal Piken.
We can always dream.
Who the heck is Cal Piken? And why don’t these guys know that green is spelled with only 2 e’s? LOL Once again, something completely out of Tony’s control will force him to play a young man. Happy for Tyler.
Tyler Greene is a great power hitter for the shortstop position, and should make up for what the Cards are losing in Brendan Ryan. The Cards have certainly been preparing for some woes at short, as Greene was drafted 30th overall in 2005, then Pete Kozma of High-A Palm Beach was drafted 17th overall in 2007. Kozma, though not the power hitter that Greene (Tyler, that is), but is an excellent contact hitter, and hoists a .315 BA in Palm Beach.
Congrats to Tyler Greene, but, at the same time, keep an eye on the up-and-coming Kozma.

Check the roster lists. Greene, spelled with 3 e’s - both Tyler and Khalil. Again, enough with the spell checker postings.
I’m not so sure, “he likely will become the Cardinals’ starting shortstop until Khalil Greene improves.” It’s more likely, Tony will try to hide him on the bench and force Thurston or Barden to play short stop.
Did you mean Cal Ripken? Wally Pip played first and was replaced by Lou Ghehrig. I certainly hope Tyler does well, I still like Brendans glove at short though.
I agree with you, BBKing. IMO, Brendan Ryan should be the starting shortstop. He made a great play again last night, and also doubled and scored. My heart went out to him when he pulled up lame. Khalil Greene’s sore forearm didn’t contribute to his lazy performance in game 2 in Atlanta, a performance I thought was pivotal in the Cards’ loss. Obviously Ryan has worked hard, and the hard work is paying off. At this point, there really is no comparison. I’m happy for Tyler Greene that he’s getting a chance to show his developing skills at the big league level. Just a note, though: I believe Lou Gehrig was already on the major league club when he subbed for Wally Pip and never looked back.
I agree with stlmojo. Tony will stick with Barden and Thurston. That said, both of those guys have been doing a great job! Tyler Greene is insurance only. I’m surprised they didn’t bring up a pitcher! I hope T. Greene gets a chance to play. This organization has not shown to be a good judge of talent. The only way to find out how good or, not so good the minor league talent is, is to get them here because of injury and let them play.
FWIW, I think the “green” comment was meant to be a joke along the lines of a double entendre….as in, he’s green.
