P.J. Walters will make start Friday vs. Cubs
PHOENIX — The St. Louis Cardinals made moves this morning to protect a spent bullpen and will make a move Friday to address the opening in their starting rotation. Righthander P.J. Walters is scheduled to make his major-league debut, starting Friday against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
Manager Tony La Russa said the other starters will shift back a day for a couple reasons: First, to keep Walters on his normal schedule; he was set to pitch Friday for Class AAA Memphis. And, second, to avoid having the rookie make his major-league debut on national television Sunday night at Wrigley.
The rotation for the coming series against the Cubs then is:
- Thursday, Adam Wainwright
- Friday, P.J. Walters
- Saturday, Kyle Lohse (on an extra day’s rest)
- Sunday, Todd Wellemeyer (on an extra day’s rest)
Chris Carpenter, who went on the disabled list morning, was scheduled to make the start Sunday. La Russa said Walters will get first crack at the opening in the rotation, and that the fill for that spot is likely to come from within the system as opposed to pulling someone from the major-league bullpen, like Kyle McClellan.
“What you do is (Walters) gets the first opportunity Friday,” La Russa said. “We’ll see how it goes. … It’s a heck of an assignment. He’s a composure guy. He’s used to having a big load on the game.”
Walters was impressive in his first start for Memphis. He pitched seven shutout innings and struck out six against two walks. The righthander has a plus changeup that, early in his professional career, was actually described by scouts as a “screwball.” Walters rejects that description, and he has more velocity on his fastball that expected from a starter who steadily climbed the system with his changeup.
Walters was drafted 346th overall in the 2006 draft.
The Cardinals will have to make a move Friday morning to make room on the roster for Walters. La Russa said that move is likely to be a pitcher optioned out to Memphis, though the next two games could play a role in dictating who it will be.

Derrick Goold said he was going to Mizzou for capital-J journalism, but after growing up in the Time Zone Baseball Forgot he was really drawn to MU sitting between two major-league cities. They Should Have Dan “Walters” McLaughlin interview him :P.
Not surprised at all by this. I think it is a good move to send someone with a difficult and somewhat rare pitch into that start…it will be hard for the Cubs to scout and gameplan against him. Furthermore, Walters good command is a better matchup against a patient Cubs team than is Boggs, who can be wild. I would still take Boggs as our long man over Brad Thompson any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Also, I think it is clear from ST and the early part of the season that McClellan does not have the ability to go multiple innings. As soon as he begins to tire he loses his command.
Obviously McClellan didn’t have an stamina on Tuesday night since he only pitched to about 3 batters. They were expecting him to go about 3 or 4 innings and he fell flat on his face. Not much better for Thompson. It doesn’t look like the Cards are going to mess around with these guys any more. A strong minor league team will pressure the big league guys to perform or be sent out.
I, too, like Walters to get the start. Now, if Zambrano would get hurt and go on the DL (cuz we all know there’s a good chance he will sometime this season), the series with the Cubs might actually be fair. Sure would be nice to play a series against them with our ace on the mound for once.
DG,
My math isn’t very good, but if Walters, Boggs and Perez are coming up, and Capenter is being DL’d and Thompson is going down, that is two out and three in.
Unless the Cardinals started with a 24 man roster, someone else just lost a seat in this game of musical chairs.
Who it be?
Read the article Joepa.. they will option someone on Friday.
Thanks getbetter. I guess all that money for Evelyn Wood was a waste.
Whats his velocity like? If he has a plus changeup the velocity on his fastball will be huge for us because it will not expose his changeup.
Drat I was set to watch P.J. in OKC Friday night. Ah well… good luck to him.
