As the Rotation Turns: Lohse Up, Pineiro Down
SAN FRANCISCO - Kyle Lohse successfully completed a bullpen throw before Sunday afternoon’s game and, according to pitching coach Dave Duncan, now projects to start series finale against the Cincinnati Reds should he get medical clearance Monday.
Lohse has not pitched since being hit on the right forearm by a pitch while squaring to bunt May 23.
However, the good news surrounding Lohse is partly offset by fresh concerns about Joel Pineiro, who experienced acute back spasms on Saturday and missed his scheduled bullpen throw Sunday. The club is expected to make a roster move to address Pineiro’s turn in the rotation Tuesday and is more likely to promote an arm from Triple-A Memphis than to give the assignment to Brad Thompson, who warmed during Saturday’s late innings for maintenance purposes.
“I really don’t want to disrupt our bullpen now,” pitching coach Dave Duncan said shortly before Sunday’s game.
Pineiro can stand without much discomfort but said “certain positions” give him great discomfort. He also faces a lengthy plane ride home after today’s game.
The club believed Lohse stood a “90 percent chance” of missing his next start before he successfully completed Sunday’s bullpen. Lohse had cut short two earlier bullpen throws, most recently on Friday.
Lohse cited a sensation akin to “a burning cramp” in his right forearm that intensified as he threw with greater effort.
The club does not plan to place Pineiro on the disabled list. The discomfort is in his lower back and, according to Pineiro, had nothing to do with manager Tony La Russa lifting him from Friday’s start against the Giants after four innings.

I am more concerned about our lack of offense! It’s feeble right now. Mo, please help Tony out with a bat!
