Cardinals Weigh Move With Greene

MILWAUKEE — Today’s lineup does not include Khalil Greene at shortstop, a change from what manager Tony La Russa had planned before Greene endured a trying game Tuesday night against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Greene met with La Russa shortly before today’s game and the club is believed to be considering a roster move with their Opening Day cleanup hitter. Greene admits to feeling extreme pressure this season and, according to sources, is dealing with anxiety-related issues. The club has discussed the possibility of approaching Greene about a stint on the disabled list as he seeks treatment for the condition.

Greene made his first start since May 17 Tuesday, committing a fielding error while going 0-for-3 with two walks.

“He had a tough night,” La Russa said afterward. “He’s very tough on himself.”

La Russa initially planned to give Greene consecutive starts but listed Brendan Ryan as today’s starter at shortstop.

Hey KG - We fans appreciate that you expect professional results from your efforts. But, we’re also a forgiving group to those we see working hard and hustling. Keep your head up. Keep giving 100% and the rest will take care of itself.

This is so sad. You hate to see a guy with as much talent as Khalil Greene struggle so mightily at the plate, and in the field. I hope he can get this anxiety thing taken care of. There is hope when you look at Zack Grienke, and what he overcame anxiety wise, to put up the kind of numbers he is this season. Get well Khalil. You da man!

Hey KG -

You are a professional baseball player, a first round pick and make 6.5 million dollars in an economy where hundreds of thousands are losing their jobs.

You should be able to handle a little pressure. Your experience and compensation mandate that. It may be a kids’ game but you are a man. This is the big leagues. You play for big money and with those riches come big expectations. Sorry.

Step it up or step off. Might sound cold but this isn’t some pee wee league were everyone soothes your feelings and everyone gets a ribbon. Grow a pair.

Giving 100% is expected at when you’re making 6.5 million. You don’t get a gold star for that.

I feel pressure too but guess what? I don’t make 6.5 million and my job/contract isn’t guaranteed. What is the pressure with a guaranteed multimillion dollar contract? Please, help me understand.

There are words for people that complain about “pressure” in these circumstances but I can’t use them here.

My heart goes out to KG. My daughter and I suffer from obsessive compulsive disorder. I am in my 50’s but I didn’t realize what I had for years until my daughter was diagnosed with it a few years ago. I was a good high school, three sport athlete and most things came easy and natural to me. The one thing that I struggled with at times was my obsessiveness to be a better hitter in baseball. I was a good hitter but I was never satisfied with only being successful three or four times out of ten. I was terrible hard on myself and it hurt me as a player. I fought it throughout high school and for years later when I played semi-pro baseball. The more I fought it the lesser hitter I became. I understand completely what KG is going through and I hope and pray that he gets help for his disorder. Unfortunately, most people just don’t understand what this is all about. I ask all of the great Cardinal fans to be considerate of what KG is going through and to keep him in your prayers. KG is a very talented player but he can never reach his full potential until he gets this disorder under control. Hang in there buddy!

Well the Cards took a gamble at the beginning of the season and lost another one.

-ant - I hate to say it, but I agree with you. I have tons of pressure and stress in my job but I don’t make $6.5 mil, and can’t ‘take a stint on the DL’… If I don’t perform, I don’t get paid - period. Keep in mind, that I’m not sure how his sickness affects how he plays baseball, but I can definitely think of $6.5 million reasons that wouldn’t have me ‘anxious’..

Maybe KG is worried about the continuing economic recession and the exploding federal deficits and how the Prez is going to pay for his coveted ”health care for all” utopian society, all at a time when ”the rich” are becoming increasing less so. Lord knows we should all have anxiety issues over this stuff. That’s why I’m a Scientologist. Somebody tell KG to get an E-meter and purge himself of icky Thetans.

I didn’t see the “ant” blog until I had already sent mine. I have to laugh at your comments “ant”. You have no idea what you are talking about and you should be ashamed of yourself. Being able to handle pressure or how much money KG makes has nothing to do with him controlling this disorder. This is an illness just like tourette syndrome or any other brain disorder. You need to become educated on these types of illnesses before you start judging. Reading your comments makes me believe that your are one of those narrow minded idiots who think that people with OCD or Tourettes are just weak and have no balls. People with these types of disorders are heroes in my mind. Most of them suffer horribly until they are diagnosed and then they do there very best to try and overcome the problem. KG has proven over the years that he can handle pressure and be successful in major league baseball. How many people in this world can say that they have ever done this. Very, very few!!! His illness has taken hold of him now and he can’t get it under control. He needs help not brainless criticism.

Some of you people are saying the some of the dumbest things i have ever seen.

1) Stop pretending that being a baseball player is just like your job. It isn’t. No matter how much you want to pretend like these guys shouldn’t get guranteed money because you don’t get guaranteed money, it doesn’t change the fact that they’re the best in the world at what they do and that’s why they can command guaranteed money.

2) Anxiety disprders don’t mean that a player should “deal with a little pressure” or “grow a pair” Seriously, these kinds of disorders don’t care if you’re a multi millionaire baseball player or salesman or an engineer. The stress and pressure you feel is inordinate to what you should feel. Imagine walking around with the weight of the entire world plus some more every single moment of every day. I doubt many of you have ever felt that way in your “high pressure” jobs.

This is a tough situation and its sad for him. Telling someone with a disorder like this to “man up” only makes things worse, because they feel like they arent trying hard enough, and makes the anxiety worse, and makes it even more difficult to perform.
