One Wait Ends; One Wait Continues

MILWAUKEE — The Cardinals’ three-run barrage against Jeff Suppan gave them a 5-1 lead over the Milwaukee Brewers but also ended a 64-inning drought without a three-run rally. Colby Rasmus and Adam Wainwright smoked home runs before second baseman Skip Schumaker singled home Joe Thurston.

With the wait for an offensive uprising over, GM John Mozeliak is increasingly pessimistic the wait for third baseman Troy Glaus’ return will have a happy ending.

Mozeliak said prior to the game that the club will soon begin a search for righthanded-hitting help at either third base or in the outfield, but that the club would first participate in a teleconference with Glaus, his personal trainer and Los Angeles orthopedic Dr. Lewis Yocum early next week. At that time the club hopes to finally learn if there is any chance of Glaus’ return from January surgery.

Said Mozeliak: “In fairness, I’m speaking more from the gut or the heart. It seems if he were getting better or improving to where he was getting closer to doing some baseball activities, we would be getting more feedback. I’m not hearing that. So as I sit here today and we’re talking about defending our offense and what’s going on – part of the equation why we are where we are — I still don’t have an answer.”

Glaus remains in Phoenix rehabbing.

“It’s like we’re losing the hope factor,” Mozeliak said about the relative silence coming out of Arizona.

The Cardinals traveled a similar road last year with starting pitchers Mark Mulder, Chris Carpenter and Matt Clement. None had an impact on a fourth-place season. Mozeliak is not prepared to repeat the mistake.

“I really don’t feel we can pull the trigger until we have confirmation whether or not he can begin baseball-related activities,” Mozeliak said, adding, “But I don’t think it’s a situation where we can wait another four or eight weeks.”
