Rick Ankiel released from hospital, everything “positive”
ST. LOUIS — Outfielder Rick Ankiel has been released from a St. Louis-area hospital and a St. Louis Cardinals official said everything is “positive” for the center fielder who crashed into the wall while making a catch late in Monday night’s game.
“Right now things are positive,” general manager John Mozeliak confirmed this morning.
He added that the team will have a more detailed update this afternoon. Ankiel is expected to be at Busch Stadium this evening as the Cardinals conclude their two-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies. The center fielder’s short-term availability will be more clear later today, though it’s possible the Cardinals will consider adding a position player to what already was a short bench. Shortstop Khalil Greene, out all weekend with a sore forearm, said he expected to be available to play for tonight’s game.
After his running catch of a line drive in deep left-center field, Ankiel stumbled and rammed into the outfield wall. He responded to questions from teammates and doctors but remained motionless on the warning track until moving his limbs when asked. X-Rays and a CT Scan taken at Missouri Baptist late Monday night showed there were no fractures in his head, neck and back. Manager Tony La Russa likened the potential injury to “whiplash.”
Here is the original game story coverage of Ankiel’s injury. Check back this afternoon for the latest.

We are all thankful that he is ok! Great news!
this is fabulous news!
That was a scary crash into the wall for Ankiel! Glad he is out of the hospital and seems to be ok!
Just glad that Ankiel is okay..hope he’s back soon
Great news! Having never crashed into a wall, I can’t speak for how that would make a person feel, but I’ve had whiplash and it is very painful for at least a week. Would be surprised if Ank is cleared to play anytime soon. Wonder who they’ll bring up from Memphis?
The way the bill on his cap bent. Im glad he is okay!!! Scary crash
Wonderful news! I will be anxiously awaiting the update from the Cards this afternoon. Does anyone else worry about these guys like they are part of your family? What a terrifying crash. As Cardinal fans, and fans of baseball in general, it’s always so nice to see how much support and love the playrers in St. Louis get.
“More clear”????
Answer the phone, that’s Mizzou calling.
They want their j-school degree back.
Glad to hear it! I love Rick, but he ain’t got nothin’ on me! OH YEAH!
A huge scare for me, since he is my favorite player over the past couple years especially. I pray that he will come back stronger than ever! Go Redbirds!
