Albert Pujols sets new highs for homers and RBIs
ST. LOUIS — Albert Pujols, the reigning MVP who has been known to recall 2006 fondly as the best season of his career, may be in the process of finishing the best month of his career.
The St. Louis Cardinals first baseman has two home runs tonight, setting or matching career highs for RBIs and home runs in a month. His 34 RBIs so far this month break his previous career best of 33 in May 2006. His 14 home runs this month match his total for April of 2006. His first home run of the evening, a solo shot on an 0-2 pitch off lefty Randy Johnson, traveled an estimated 445 feet — but it appeared to have the distance needed to leave Busch Stadium, had it not been for the stairway column that caps the seats in left field.
Pujols’ two homers tonight is his the 30th time in his career that he has had a multi-homer game, and the seventh time this season. He is believed to be the 32nd player in baseball history to reach 30 homers by the break.

Derrick Goold said he was going to Mizzou for capital-J journalism, but after growing up in the Time Zone Baseball Forgot he was really drawn to MU sitting between two major-league cities. Goold joined the Post-Dispatch in 2001 after working for The Times-Picayune and Rocky Mountain News, covering sports from LSU to NHL and every level of baseball in between.
We just need to make the playoffs… please!!! With a reduced rotation all it takes is a little hitting streak!
What alberts doing is incredible but wasted because were losing anyway.Larussa has the rest of the team so messed up they cant perform.Other than molina tony has jerked the rest of the team around so much that mentally their just not right. You hit 37 hrs w/ 120 rbis you sit the bench. You work your but off to learn a new position and you get switched to the outfield or sit the bench. You get 3 hits you sit the next game. You play good defense you switch positions next game.I get dizzy just watchin ,i can imagine how the players feel.To me theres only one option if were gonna win,do what the rockies did, fire the manager1
God, what an idiot…fire LaRussa???? Are you kidding? I can’t take the spoiled fans of today. We have the best baseball town in America, the best player and best manager and people act like the Cardinals should win every year. LaRussa is not the problem…if Ludwick starts hitting and Glaus comes back, we are a pitcher short from winning this division.
Seriously, fire the manager!?!?!?!?! You’ve got to be kidding me.
When do we hold these major league players accountable for what they are supposed to be doing and how they are performing. Every player goes through slumps, even Pujols, but at sometime our “big bats” need to come through. What are we paying these guys millions of dollars for. These men have produced in the past and they need to start coming through for LaRussa and this team no matter where there are batted in the order or placed in the field. Continue to work and stay focused and hopefully the rsults will follow.
Sure could use Rolen and Kennedy these days.
This club can win the division, they just need to get over the dumps they are in right now. What I would like to see is Tony get kicked out of a game, scream at the ump, and make a big sceen. Maybe even Albert. They need a boost somehow.
Albert will a New York Yankee in a year or so — no way the Cardinals will have enough money to keep him. Especially so if LaRussa leaves. Of course, MLB needs a salary cap, but that won’t be done in time.
Tom; your the freaking idiot, you obviously havent played competitve sports and dont know squat about being mentally right and in your comfort zone while performing.Baseball is hard enough without the manager making it harder. It has nothing to do with being spoiled, and win every year we havent done crap for 2 1/2 years now. This team has the talent and the pitching to win this div but the manager wont let the players relax and play their game.No other manager in baseball pulls the stupid crap larussa does and you dont know enough about the game to even realize this.Ludwick cant get on a roll because every time he starts to he gets put back on the bench , it frustrates the players and makes it much harder to perform.Who is the only player larussa doesnt mess with?Pujols and he’s the only one playing up to his potential.I know you dont see the mistakes tony makes on a daily basis because you dont have the knowledge to understand. But before you start your name calling look in the mirror because it is you that is the idiot.
Havent heard much about playing a hard 9 lately.Larussa has lost this team, they have totally laid down because they realize what a idiot is steering the ship!
Eric you are deffinetly right on the player switching around each player should play their position and stay in for 9 innings. This is the only way this team is going to start winning.I like LaRussa but some of the stupid crap he is doing is costing us wins. This team hands down is alot better than the scrubs and the brew crew this is ridicolous.Trade for Holliday and a good starting pitcher and we go all the way.Of coUrse that stupid idiot Mo dont want to mess with the team of the future. But what an idiot the future is NOW.LETS GO CARDS.
Rolen will get hurt pretty soon.Hes already played all of the games he normally does in a season.
I love when people say that we should fire LaRussa - a friend of mine has been saying that since ‘98 or so. YOU CAN’T FIRE A MANAGER WITHOUT A PLAN! If you fire LaRussa, you have to replace him with someone. What manager would you replace LaRussa with? I hear Clint Hurdle’s available - that would bring back the nostalgia of his 1986 run with the Cards (since it worked so well with Torre). If we wait it out, we might be able to get our hands on Cecil Cooper, which will of course bring back images of the ‘82 World Series championship. Seriously though - there is not a manager in baseball I would rather have leading the Cardinals - 7 Post Season appearances in the 13 seasons he’s been here, including one World Championship. He’s a hell of a lot better manager than any of us ever could hope to be (come to think of it, he had a hell of a lot better playing career than most of us did, too. I never could have hit .199 in the bigs)
How about we trade Duncan,Wellmeyer,Ankiel for Holliday,Cahill. That seems like an even trade to me .Get rid of the deadbeats.
MIke, what exactly is it about Duncan, Ankiel, and Wellemeyer that the A’s would find attractive? Duncan’s power and fieldng skills? Ankiel’s consistency and upcoming free agency with Scott Boras as his agent? Wellemeyer’s ERA and WHIP? And Eric, we all recognize your genius vs. LaRussa’s, who somehow has managed his teams to 2,502 wins more than you have, despite the fact that he and anyone who supports him is an idiot. Please continue to dazzle us with your wisdom…
I will tell you WILLBART what they can find attractive about this deal.Number 1 Ankiel and Duncan both have power we all know that if of course you havent been paying attention.Number 2 all 5 of these guys maybe need a change of scenery ever heard of that because right know they all suck.Number 3 Wellemeyer is a decent pitcher when want to be.So I think it would be a good deal if done. But of course I forgot we have big bad MO.nOTHING EVER WILL GET DONE RIGHT.Besides Holliday is coming up a free agent at the end of the year to just like Ankiel.
Willbart; Learn how to read and you might see that i was defending myself being called a idiot by your buddy mike.Im sure if given the oppourtunity to manage in the big leagues with the teams larussa has had myself or anyone with a little bit of knowledge of baseball could have won a game or 2.I dont compare myself and tony[although i know right now i could do better with the lineup]i compare tony with other mlb managers that i have watched, and they dont do the stupid crap tony does.I just hope tony is smart enough to figure out that what hes doing isnt working and finds the right lineup and sticks with it.If not then he needs to go down the road because im tired of watchig this slop.
Larussa:To go along with his 2502 wins [3rd all time]is his 2184 losses which is also [3rd all time].With a winning percentage of .534 which ranks 62 all time and 7th among active managers.Joe torre has a higher win % 540 with 4 world series wins compared to larussas 2 in 600 plus less games. So maybe tony isnt the greatest manager going like some people care to believe. His musical lineups is a joke to being a good manager.Great managers dont mess with their players the way he does.Hes got alot of people fooled but alot of people are starting to see through the B.S..
Why is everyone afraid to say it? Am I the only one who notices the Emperor is naked? Larussa was great - a genious - in his day. He’s lost it. Bunting too early (giving up an out), idiotic stealing, running players back and forth to Memphis, a good contact hitter bunting, each player except Pujols and Molina not kwowing on game day what position he’ll play and finally leaving pitchers in too long when they obviously don’t have it on. Larussa was great in his day but he is now overthinking his every move. I love the Cards but it is time for Ozzie Smith or Hosa Okendo to run the Cards. A good manager can fire up a team. The fire is gone.
I TOTALLY AGREE W/ JOHN PALLO LARUSSA IS PAST HIS PRIME.
Eric havnt you seen what Mo is doing to this team.Last year needed a closer to possibly go all the way.Now we got this year why Isnt he going for Holliday what the hell is the deal with this damn idiot. The reason LaRussa has lost the fire is because the dumbass is not making good trades think about it.When somebody gets hurt lets call on minor league players BULLCRAP.This team never will contend with Mo around face it.Havnt you heard Holliday is wanting to come to St.Louis.
