Cardinals deal Chris Perez for third baseman Mark DeRosa (updated with quotes)
ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Cardinals acquired Cleveland Indians third baseman Mark DeRosa late this evening for reliever Chris Perez and a player to named later. The Indians have long been dangling DeRosa on the trade block, gathering attention from a variety of teams, but the Cardinals were willing to part with a major-league reliever to make the deal happen.
DeRosa fits the Cardinals’ instant need at third base, but his versatility makes him a long-term factor for the Cardinals. He can also play second base — as he often did for the Chicago Cubs last season — and he can play in the outfield.
DeRosa has 13 homers and 50 RBIs this season.
“It’s disappointing,” DeRosa told reporters in Cleveland. “You feel like you want to hit the rewind button and start over. The toughest part is having to walk away from guys I was just starting to get to know. But, selfishly, I’m going to a really good team with a chance to battle for a division title.”
The versatile fielder will be in St. Louis tomorrow in time to start against the Minnesota Twins. He’ll wear No. 7.
“We felt that this deal provided us with an excellent opportunity to improve our team, especially from an offensive standpoint,” said Cardinals’ general manager John Mozeliak in a statement. “We feel our team has the pitching to contend, and if we can get the offense to produce at a more consistent level, then our overall performance should benefit.”
The Cardinals may see DeRosa initially as the usual starter at third base, but contacted this evening by Hall of Famer Rick Hummel, manager Tony La Russa said the value of DeRosa’s addition is that he can play wherever, whenever. He may not have an everyday position, but he’ll be an everyday player. Mozeliak told me late this evening that it is too “premature” to discuss the long-range goals for DeRosa and if the price (i.e., Perez) indicated a plan to do something in the form of an extension with the infielder.
The message being sent is clear.
Last season, the Cardinals were in contention at the trade deadline but were unable to make a deal of any impact. DeRosa, who was gathering attention from multiple National League teams as July approached, adds credibility to the front office’s publicly stated goal of being aggressive and acquiring a bat to help the flagging offense.
“He hits in a lot of different spots in a winning way, which makes him a valuable player,” La Russa told Hummel. He added about the clubhouse reaction to acquiring a veteran: “I think they’ll be very excited because he’s got a well-deserved reputation of being a great teammate and a winning player. I think the guys will be enthused.”
The player to be named later will be selected from an agreed upon list of options that will be given to Cleveland. The Indians have until the end of the minor-league season to select a player. Indications are that the list could include Francisco Samuel and Jess Todd, or a similar player. A report on FOXSports.com identified those two relievers as names on the list.

Derrick Goold said he was going to Mizzou for capital-J journalism, but after growing up in the Time Zone Baseball Forgot he was really drawn to MU sitting between two major-league cities. never was overly impressed with Perez so that’s no big loss but I wonder who the player to be named will be?
Please, let it it not be Brett Wallace. (Hmmm, maybe the Indians need a DH. Duncan?)
This is a GREAT trade. Perez may go on to be a decent relief pitcher but we have taken care of a MAJOR need…a true 3B. I can’t wait to see him in a Cards uniform.
Agreed jj. Perez always seemed to buckle whenever the game was on the line. Good swap Mo…
GREAT TRADE!!!!! Maybe we can resign him for the next year or 2. Still need a RIGHTHANDED POWER HITTING outfielder. Who is the player to be named later?? GREAT TRADE MO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The honorable DG is the first to deliver some good news.
Good deal. A deal that a contender would make! Question…is Matt Holiday still in the fire. After what I read in the Oakland Tribune I hope not. The prospect the A’s would likely want is none other than BRET WALLACE…
“Crow here. Get your crow here. Only $2.9MM.” He’s on pace for 28 HR, 106 RBI, and 100 Runs with a .799 OPS; all similar numbers to last year with the Cubs and better than Holliday’s stats this year, but that’s probably not good enough for the Fo hatewagon. I can’t wait to rub their face in it! (happy dance)
The club probably wont go after Holiday also, but I always said that I prefer DeRosa instead because he’s more versatile, cheaper, and Holliday’s stats away from Coors aren’t worth his price tag. DeRosa isn’t a type A free agent, but he fits our needs right now. I can’t wait to hear all the morons that said the FO want get anyone this year (w.champion, stlcardsfan78, brianbase, djgolf1, etc.) The handwriting was on the wall for over a month given our lower payroll this year and all the attention trade talk has been getting. Maybe this will get the morons off Mo’s back, well for about 3 weeks anyways because they can’t remember anything beyond that.
the really great thing about this trade?? the cub fans here in chicago are MAD as heck that he was traded away.. they want him back!! some days are really tough here in the windy city as a cards fan.. but tonight was really good
I was listening to a Chicago sports talk radio station for awhile tonight, man are they bemoaning this trade. Calls were ripping the Chicago FO for not getting a deal done and sitting on their hands. Many now think this deal will push the Cards over the top, I guess time will tell.
Good Trade, let’s look elsewhere though for a RH OF. Not a Holliday fan. Let’s keep Motte. Welcome to STL MDR
