Mortensen Promoted; Greene May Return to DL

The Cardinals have yet to make an official announcement, but the club has promoted righthanded pitcher Clayton Mortensen from Triple-A Memphis, most likely to assume infielder Khalil Greene’s spot on the roster. Mortensen was told Sunday night to make his way to St. Louis, where he becomes the 14th rookie to appear for the parent club. Mortensen’s role remains uncertain; however, pitching coach Dave Duncan on Sunday stated a desire to give struggling starter Todd Wellemeyer another turn in the rotation.

Mortensen will either slip into a long relief role or be given Brad Thompson’s spot in the rotation. Thompson is still listed to start tonight’s series opener against the San Francisco Giants.

Greene’s return to the disabled list appears likely after manager Tony La Russa pulled him from Sunday’s game after a fielding error and two strikeouts. Greene suffered a relapse of symptoms associated with social anxiety disorder Thursday in New York. Sunday was his first appearance since and, according to La Russa and general manager John Mozeliak, a hard decision on the Cardinals’ most significant off-season acquisition is approaching.

Greene is in an 0-for-16 skid that has dropped his overall average to .200.

Mortensen, 24, is 7-4 with a 4.24 ERA in 14 starts for the Triple-A Redbirds. The 36th overall pick of the 2007 amateur draft arrives barely two years after making his last appearance for Gonzaga. He has made 56 minor-league appearances during his rapid ascent. Today would be Mortensen’s turn to start, as he worked seven innings in a June 24 win over Iowa. Mortensen has at times struggled with command at Memphis but owns a 1.86 ground ball to fly ball ratio. His overall 4.24 ERA includes three quality starts in his last nine appearances.

I don’t get it. Thompson deserves to stay in the rotation more than Welley. In my opinion.

thompsons era is 2.2 runs lower than wellemeyer’s for the month of june, 5 starts. Duncan must be crazy. why give this guy another start when he cannot throw the ball as hard as he did last year. that is a problem which is not going away in one more start. He needs to go on dl and be shut down. then in minors rehab to get his velocity back.

Yes, of course, Duncan is crazy. He knows nothing about pitching… please.

This smells of a showcase for a trade doesn’t it? Unless Khalil was that bad and Tony wanted the extra pitcher. If Thompson stays in the rotation, Kinney slides up, Hawksworth moves into Kinney’s spot and Mortenson is the long guy?

My guess is Oakland….I mean, some team wanted to see him against big-league pitching before they acquired him. That means, Ludwick, Mortenson and (insert other pitcher) are still in play for Holliday, right?

Good riddance to Khalil Greene. He is not a good player anymore, and he knows it. But he gets a free pass from all of us… Just mention any type of social “disorder” and bam, everything’s ok. He’s making tons of money so maybe he can go blow his nose with some extra cash… at least he still has a paycheck. That kind of performance at a normal job would get you fired!

Allen - Are you implying you would want Holliday? If so, why? He’s no better than Ludi. I don’t get people’s fascination with him.

This is not a showcase for a trade, it is a showcase for 2010. Mortenson is up to show TLR and Duncan what he has and if he can figure into one of the two potential open rotation spots. Same with Hawksworth.

Thompson’s start tonight should be thought of as an absolute: pitch well, stay in. Pitch bad, back to the pen. Wellemeyer should be shut down. It has to be his elbow again or his shoulder. Put him on the DL and figure it out! Give his rotation spot to Hawksworth or Mortenson until Lohse comes back. Then, figure it out from there…or trade for Doug Davis. I prefer that.

I am in 100% agreement with Philip. Get KG out of the clubhouse now and don’t let him back in. Can you imagine KG playing alongside Ty Cobb? I wonder how many words or phrases there are for “Wu$$y”? (I know the obvious one.)

Actually, DrPhil, if Kahlil, with his talent level, played alongside Ty Cobb…Kahlil would probably be hitting at or around the same numbers Cobb did.

Holiday would be the perfect clean-up hitter for the Cards. Oakland Coliseum is the second worst park for hitters behind Petco. The Oakland ballpark has a huge foulball territory that gives pitchers an advantage. Holiday’s average would be about 15-20 points higher (currently .274) and he would have more HRs if he were in STL. He would give the Cardinals a bigger presence behind Pujols than Ludwick. Plus his OBP is .372 right now and would probably be closer to .400 if (again) he were in STL hitting behind El Hombre. Ludwick’s OBP is a dismal .303.
