CINCINNATI — St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols led all National League players with more than 5.3 million votes in this year’s All-Star Game selection process, and he established a new vote-total record for the National League.
Pujols’ 5,397,374 votes are the second most ever for a player, trailing only Ken Griffey Jr.’s 6,079,688 that he received while playing center field for Seattle in 1994.
Pujols is an eight-time National League All-Star, and has been elected to start by the fans four times. This is the second time in his career that he’s led all players in All-Star votes, and it is the third time in his career that he has led the NL in votes received. According to a release from MLB, “Albert finished as the top online
vote-getter via the All-Star Game Sprint Online Ballot on MLB.com.”
New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter led all American League players for the first time in his career with 4,851,889 votes. It is the fifth time fans have elected Jeter to the starting lineup.
