Injured DeRosa “day to day”
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
The St. Louis Cardinals did not get the worst news on injured infielder-outfielder Mark DeRosa, who hurt his left wrist on a swing in Tuesday night’s game. DeRosa is unable to play tonight here against the San Francisco Giants but he has not been placed on the 15-day disabled list and is listed as “day to day,” meaning that the club hopes he plays sometime before the All-Star break a week from Sunday.
“Day to day is optimistic for us,” said Cardinals manager Tony La Russa.”The fact that we didn’t disable him is optimistic.”
Nonetheless, the Cardinals added infield insurance, summoning second baseman Jarrett Hoffpauir from Class AAA Memphis, sending out righthanded pitcher Clayton Mortensen.

I would send Duncan & Thurston down for some helmets we really don’t need those bums up north…..
I guess that is why you are a recliner manager - you need to stay there. You are right where you need to be.
recliner manager, you’re an idiot. Neither have options remaining.
While I share your sentiment regarding their on-the-field play, I understand that they’re with the team until such time as they’re DFA’d or DL’d. I say this because it’s highly unlikely anyone would want either in a trade, no matter who the other components were.
So I’m the idiot but you just agreed to my personal opinion, I guess that makes 2 recliner managers… hell I don’t care about options, it’s obvious that management doesn’t care simply by the idiotic moves with the roster this season. I would recommend that MO, Tony, and Duncan have a seat in the recliner and allow the bloggers to take over….. It can’t get any worse than this crap
Is it me, or do the Cardinals’ players seem to get injured much more frequently than players on other teams? Regardless of the degree of severity, it just seems like the Cards are always having people go down. Any thoughts?
Remember when Bernie wrote that article about Dr. Paletta a few seasons back, questioning his ability to care for the team? Remember how much of a hot-button issue that was for the Cardinals? Does anyone think the Cardinals’ training and/or medical staff is doing its job? Obviously, they can’t make grown men stretch properly before each game, but man, it seems like something’s not right. Any theories? Are we getting players at lower value because we’re getting ones who are injury-prone or have histories of injuries? What do people think?
I’s just you. There are 166 players on the DL in Major League Baseball. The Cards have 6, which is the same number as the Cubs. The Pirates have 12, the Braves have 9.
I get kind of tired of reading these criticisms of the Cardinals medical staff. They don’t get the guys until they’ve already got an injury. The thing that seems to get overlooked, which for my money seems a more likely culprit if there is an injury problem with this team, or any other team for that matter, is in their conditioning. But, injuries are unavoidable. When you think about a game in which players might stand around for 15 minutes doing almost nothing and then have to suddenly burst into action, maybe it’s not so surprising that guys pull muscles and strain tendons.
I appreciate how every team has to deal with injuries throughout a season. The Mets have it this year. The Cubs had it a few years back. As LPD said, it’s a game where guys can stand around for 15 minutes and then have to burst into full speed — and do that for 162 games. And I appreciate the numbers Norm put out there — those figures are telling.
But with the Cardinals, it seems like we’re battling injuries each season with key players. I mean for godsake, Carp pulled an oblique in the on-deck circle — no sudden bursts there. But then there are players like Yadi who can get bulldozed at the plate, sit out for a game or two, and come back like new. Or players like Pujols who just put up with a nagging elbow. Sure, there are players with different levels of durability — but it seems like we have a lot of the less durable ones. Scott Rolen, Chris Carpenter, and Mark Mulder, to name a few off the top of my head. The reason for that may be conditioning, or it may be we’re not factoring it in to our player selection as much as other teams. Granted, 2 of the 3 I’ve named are pitchers, so maybe that has something to do with it.
I also follow the Red Sox (not because I like them, but because many of my friends are Sox fans, so I have to in order to harass them). At least from what I can tell, it’s not that the Red Sox are immune to injuries, but the severity and frequency of their injuries seem far lower than the Cards. I went to college in Massachusetts for four years and watched a ton of Sox games with friends. Back then, Varitek, Damon, Ortiz, Manny, Pedro, and Nomar were always playing — we’re talking big impact players with very few bumps and bruises sustained during the season. Granted, the Sox are a big-market team with lots of cash to spend, but I’m not sure that makes a difference.
It may very well not be the medical staff. It may very well be the nature of the game. It may also be the Cardinals getting players and not bearing in mind their injury history, or thinking about how durable a guy might be. Or maybe the Cardinals are just overly cautious when a player feels something funny. Regardless, injuries seem like the hallmark of every Cardinals season of recent memory. It seems like we’re always saying “Once so and so gets healthy.” Get healthy and stay healthy already.
We’re a game and a half out - with a team that could easily be in last place. Stay in your recliner dufus
Sometimes trades just don’t work out. This may be one of those times! I hope not!
