Jeter, Longoria headline AL All-Star starters
CINCINNATI — The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox have yet to visit St. Louis’ new downtown ballpark during inteleague play, but both American League East rivals will have several players familiar with it after the 80th All-Star Game.
The Yankees and Red Sox — both of whom last played in St. Louis in 2005, at Busch II — each have two players on the starting AL lineup for the All-Star Game, which will be held July 14 at current Busch Stadium.
A player from the American League East will hold every position in the infield, though second-year star Evan Longoria bounced fan-vote stalwart from the starting lineup at third base. Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez had led the fan vote in total votes the past two seasons. Rodriguez’s teammate, shortstop Derek Jeter, jousted with Longoria for the overall lead in this year’s fan vote on the AL side.
Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer, who has flirted with .400 this season, will start for the AL.
The starting lineup, as announced this afternoon by Major League Baseball.
