Thompson has another poor start
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
CINCINNATI _ Righthander Brad Thompson had his third straight mediocre start for the Cardinals today as the Cincinnati Reds touched him up for five runs in five innings as they took a 5-2 lead over the St. Louis Cardinals into the late innings at Great American Ball Park.
Thompson has given up 13 earned runs in his last 16 innings covering the three starts. His next start is slated for Friday at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs but that might come under advisement.
One of the two Cardinals’ runs through eight innings came on a 453-foot homer by rookie Colby Rasmus in the first inning. It was Rasmus’ ninth homer of the season.

I’ve been saying for awhile that the Cardinals should consider calling the agent for Chuck James, former lefty starter for the Atlanta Braves. I can gaurantee you that he’d be a significant improvement over both Brad Thompson and Todd Wellemeyer. I know Pedro Martinez, Tom Glavine, and Ben Sheets are the “sexy” names…but James is a lot younger than all three of those guys, plus he’s a lefty.
Thompson has to pitch for a lineup that includes 4 guys who are 0 for 52, not counting himself. No wonder he has problems. The two guys hitting behind Pujols are 0 for their last 32…that inspires confidence. Sorry Dave, your son has to go. What do you think Mo could get in trade for him straight up? Probably nothing. No one wants him and that is a true value of his worth.
my grandpa once told me, you can wish in one hand and crap in the other and see which one fills up first. tony should hear this. no matter how much you want duncan, ankiel and thurston to succeed, they just are not. you’ve given them every chance. you’ve played them time and again and made excuse after excuse. some say, yea but we were so good in april and tony was responsible for alot of that. b.s. when everyone is hitting, a manager looks like a genius. when everyone is not hitting a manager looks like a bum. but when some are hitting, and you play the ones that are not hitting you just look stupid. tony won thousands of games. what no one mentions is that he was blessed with many really good teams that almost anyone would succeed with. he also has thousands of losses. too bad that there is no way to accurately analyze just how integral a manager is to wins and losses. tony is making WAY too many mental mistakes. HE SHOULD GO! surely any other manager would never hit dunc and ank back to back right now. what is his motivation? does he want to get fired?
Yea, blame it on Thompson! Tony’s line up sucks!!!! Then he pinch hits for Rasmus, but little Dunc stays. Big Dunc & Little Dunc must wear knee pads before each game, only reason for this.
Sorry, Mr. Hummel, but this is irresponsible reporting. When you consider there were two critical errors, there was another gaff by Thurston in going to second when he should have gone home, and the total ineptness of our offense, it’s pretty ridiculous to blame Brad Thompson for this one. If Thompson and Piniero were playing on a team that had any offense besides a one man show they would have winning records and they would also be sought after pitchers by a number of clubs. I wonder how Albert feels being one of the best baseball clubs in the majors - singlehandedly?
Some trade ideas?? Chris Duncan,Allen Craig,David Kopp for Matt Holliday?? Duncan,Daryl Jones,Brendon Ryan, for Jermaine Dye @ Josh Fields?? Tyler Greene,Mitch Boggs for Scott Hairston?? Duncan,Allen Craig,Tyler Greene for Alex Rios?? Duncan for Garrett Atkins?? ANY OF THESE SOUND GOOD??? Any of these would HELP!!!!! Anybody else got any ideas????
The idea that we can trade any of these guys is laughable. What could you get for Duncan, Tyler Greene and Joe Thurston, probably a lot of phones being slammed down in your ear, or uncontrollable laughter on the other end of the line. Ankiel might get you some marginal player, but nothing that would help, being a FA and a Boras client and sucking tend to lessen his appeal. Mo really has little to work with to try to fix this mess currently. His best hope is that DeRosa comes back OK and soon and that Glaus can make it back by August.
first i am not a cardinal fan, i hope u cards fans r not fooling yourself about fat albert or the machine as u like to call him but in my opinion the machine is fueled by hgh, u will say he has never tested positive, ill say there is no test for hgh, jack clark was putting manny down today on post game, maybe he ought to look at his 1st basemen before he shoots his mouth off. go look at a pic when the machine was in minors pics dont lie. a scout said albert would be a good big leager if he was bigger and had more power and presto it happened. u will say he worked out, ill say working out dont make your head bigger. dont b suprised if his name comes out like a-rods did in future, then u all will have egg on your face.
Hey Craig, go somewhere else with your unsubstantiated hating. The size of his head? It looks the same now as then, you are an idiot.
The other commenters seem to be dead on in the criticism of the lineup - Rasmus should NEVER be pinch-hit for, and Thurston needs to be benched permanently. The OF should be Skip, Rasmus and Ludwick, and relegate Duncan and Ankiel to pinch-hitting.
duncans slide at 2nd today was a dirty play he went after hairston jr., so dont cry if reds retaliate tomorrow, bruces slide at 2nd is how u do it u dont go after a guy like duncan did today, cheaters and dirty players u should be real proud of your ballclub.
