ST. LOUIS — Manager Tony La Russa dislikes rewriting his lineup once it’s posted in the St. Louis Cardinals clubhouse, but this morning he had to when Mark DeRosa conceded he was too sore to start today’s game against the Washington Nationals.

“He’s sore in spots,” La Russa said.

Khalil Greene will slide into the starting lineup, batting sixth like DeRosa and playing third like DeRosa.

This will be Greene’s first start of the home stand. He last started August 18 at Los Angeles, and he hit the game-tying home run as a pinch-hitter Friday night. He also started August 18. Greene hasn’t started anywhere but third base since his first return from the disabled list.

The Cardinals lineup for today’s game:

  1. Schumaker, 2B
  2. Rasmus, CF
  3. Pujols, 1B
  4. Holliday, LF
  5. Ankiel, RF
  6. Greene, 3B
  7. Molina, C
  8. Ryan, SS
  9. Wainwright, P

Why don’t we just give Tony the benefit of the doubt please. It’s not like Ludwick is tearing the cover off the ball right now.

Please bat Pujols 4th once this year,….just once!

No one should be suprised to see Ank, BUT- I would like to see Colby stay down in the 6 hole with Ryan hitting 2nd. Until Colby starts stealing, he seems more valuable as an RBI man

ludwick’s not having an All-Star season, but the guy continues to produce rbis. I don’t understand why he’s not in the line-up every game.

Ludwick is an average outfielder. Ankiel is an above average outfielder who sometimes makes super plays that save runs and games for the Cards. Both are having problems at the plate and on balance Ankiel equals or surpasses anything Ludwick has to offer this year.

You have to keep the Ankiel/Ludwick thing in context. The division is in the bag, and you are playing the ‘nats. You want to keep the whole lineup involved, and it makes sense giving Ankiel a little pt. It also can’t hurt to give Ludwick a rest. He does a lot of running around out there in right field (LOL) and could probably use a day off. Ankiel is the type of guy who you want sharp for at bats in the playoffs.
