The Shaq vs. El Hombre challenge pits two top athletes against each other — on Pujols’ turf. The baseball skills competition should give the Cardinals first baseman the edge. Here’s a comparison:

Albert says he does not like the nickname “El Hombre” (he does not want have the Spanish nickname that Stan Musial has), so why do you keep using it? He even suggested kiddingly that you call him Winnie the Poo. Why not “Albert the Poo” or “Winnie the Puljos”. Why don’t you respect his request?

Yep. He said that El Hombre is the only nickname he doesn’t like at the All-Star game, specifically because Stan is the man, not him. He said it while being interviewed on the pre-game on the MLB channel.

Darryl-
You totally undervalued Shaq’s career stats…you gave his 2008-2009 stats.

His Career stats read as follows: 24.7 points per game, 11.2 rebounds per game, and 2.6 assists per game. Shaq is an all-time great and I knew his numbers had to be better than what you had shown. His numbers have come down quite a bit the last few years however.

I also heard Pujols mention that he does not like being called “El Hombre” while being interviewed during the Home Run Derby. As has been said, he doesn’t want to steal Musial’s nickname.

It’s a well known fact that journos are the slowest on the uptake. Give it a few years and they may catch on that his name is ALBERT.

I’ve found it’s usually forum commentators calling Albert Pujols “el hombre,” not reporters. BTW, Jose Alberto Pujols is his full name. He probably goes by Albert in order to assimilate to U.S. culture, and has his thoughts about the nickname “el hombre” despite it being bestowed upon him by Cards fans to link two great players of the franchise.

How about “El Hombre Dos?” Actually, the nickname I like the best is, “MVP”.

He has other nicknames, like The Machine, Prince Albert, or Phat Albert.
