Lohse set for weekend start at Colorado
HOUSTON — St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa announced the rotation for this weekend’s three-game series in Colorado, and encouraged by what he saw Monday here at Minute Maid Park he’s keeping righthander Kyle Lohse on regular rest.
La Russa confirmed that the rotation against the Rockies will be:
- Chris Carpenter on Friday
- Adam Wainwright on Saturday
- Kyle Lohse on Sunday
Before this afternoon, La Russa had left Sunday open to the possibility of having No. 3 starter Joel Pineiro make that start. Pineiro starts tonight against the Houston Astros, and bringing him back on Sunday would mean pitching him on the normal four days of rest. Instead, La Russa will keep Lohse on turn. Lohse returned to the rotation Monday to throw six solid innings against Houston and get his first road win of the season.
“I think all you can do is schedule to the next series and then stop,” La Russa said. “That’s as far as you take things. … You see how they develop from there.”
La Russa said it’s not time yet for the Cardinals to commit an October role to John Smoltz or Lohse — or any of the other pitchers, for that — and that he expected either veteran to be able to transition into a relief role, if needed, without difficulty.
Smoltz will start Wednesday against Houston

Derrick Goold said he was going to Mizzou for capital-J journalism, but after growing up in the Time Zone Baseball Forgot he was really drawn to MU sitting between two major-league cities. Goold joined the Post-Dispatch in 2001 after working for The Times-Picayune and Rocky Mountain News, covering sports from LSU to NHL and every level of baseball in between.
Great!! I hope he keeps that schedule–I get to see Carp and Waino in Denver this weekend!!
The baseball season is long and demanding of starting pitcher’s, especially since the Cards are leading the majors in starting pitching innings completed. Keep starting everybody which allows the big three to get the extra day of rest until the playoffs start and their arms will be pushed to limits again but it is only a 11 game season at that point. It also allows Kyle to get back to form and John to increase his arm strength, both very good things.
