What was billed as an optional for-our-eyes only workout continues at Busch Stadium this afternoon almost two hours after the first pitchers popped from the first-base dugout. Everyone on the postseason travel squad is in attendance, logical since the team charter departs for the airport shortly after the session.

Manager Tony La Russa decreed no media contact with players today, but the skipper is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. presser.

Some tidbits:

The workout is tightly organized with many drills structured like a morning spring training work. Heavy emphasis placed on infield work and bunt plays.

TLR roaming the field for individual sessions with various players and coaches. He had a lengthier one-on-one with prodigal infielder Brendan Ryan before moving on to Colby Rasmus.

Bench coach Joe Pettini went over a review of signs and infield plays with La Russa playing an active role.

Adam Wainwright and Ryan Franklin threw side sessions. Nothing unusual for Wainwright, who is set to start Thursday’s Game 2 at Dodger Stadium. For Franklin, it was his first side work off a mound in recent memory. Once the NL saves leader, Franklin has one conversion since Sept. 5.

As reported Sunday, Khalil Greene and Josh Kinney are not in attendance, as La Russa informed both after Sunday’s season-ending loss they would not be part of the postseason mix.

Sore-kneed catcher Yadier Molina took some grounders off the fungo at first base. His flexibility appeared improved over Friday’s nightmarish too-long session behind the plate.

La Russa has yet to address his roster decisions. He will be given the chance to elaborate in about 45 minutes. Will update later.

PItchers just left the field as position players remain for batting practice against first-base coach Dave McKay.

After the way they’ve played the last 2 weeks, I would certainly hope that everyone on the postseason roster showed up for the workout. Safe travels to LA and good luck, guys! Let’s go shut ‘em down!
