Wainwright wins Outstanding Pitcher award from peers

ST. LOUIS — When it came to the pitchers who had been among the most consistent, most steady and, at times, most dominant in the National League for the past two seasons, St. Louis Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright lacked the Q-rating of the other aces.

That changed Wednesday.

Wainwright, the league leader in victories and innings pitched, won the Players Choice award for Most Outstanding National League Pitcher. The award is voted on by members of the Major League Baseball Players’ Association, and it marks the second time in as many days that a Cardinal has won a Players’ Choice award.

The award was announced the morning on ESPN Radio, during Mike and Mike in The Morning.

Wainwright credited the other ace on the staff.

Chris Carpenter “sets the bar and he makes you just want to keep up right there with him,” Wainwright said. “The great thing about Chris is he’s so talented. He’s really a good teacher, too.”

Wainwright went 19-8 with a 2.63 ERA and 233 innings pitched. He went more than two dozen consecutive starts with at least six innings and he had 13 consecutive starts where he allowed two or fewer earned runs. Voting is conducted late in the season.

Both Carpenter and Wainwright are considered front-runners for the NL Cy Young Award. The traditional award given to the best pitcher in each league is voted on by members of the Baseball Writers Association of America, and the winner will be announced in late November.

Here’s a link to the Bird Land blog about about the Players’ Choice award as a Cy Young Award predictor.

Hope this is a good sign for Wainwright winning the Cy. It’s obvious either him or Carp should win it, but Lincecum may sneak in and steal votes with Wainwright and Carp canceling each other out.

Great news! Wainwright really did a great job this season and deserves the recognition.

Congrats Waino. This was his break out season. Lincecum will win the Cy but Waino will be a contender for, hopefully, years to come.

Wow! What an honor for Adam to be voted this award by his peers. His comments toward Chris Carpenter are also very honorable and reflect well on him. I am happy for this man. People rejoice when justice is served. Lets hope the CY AWARD comes back to St. Louis. There are two deserving players that merit it.

I hope the Cards find a way not to waste Pujols, Wainwright and Carpenter. The clock is ticking. BTW, even in light of what I just stated, if Holliday demands $20 million/yr.; I think it’s time to say goodbye.

Greyshark, I think I speak for many here when I say please root for another team and leave us to enjoy the Cardinals. I’m so tired of spoiled, impatient fans like you who think their team has to win it all every year or they are a complete failure.

Congrats to Waino! Great to hear. To me there’s no bigger honor then your PEERS choosing you for an award. Too bad he’s going to get screwed out of Cy Young by SPORTS WRITERS.

Well said dhaab. The constant whining when things don’t work out is getting reaaaaaally old. With 30+ teams in the league, the Cardinals aren’t going to be top dog every year. They were enjoyable to watch this year and were a top 4 team in the NL. As long as they’re competitive, be happy and enjoy it.

Grey, Seriously? 7 Division titles this decade. 2 Pennants. 1 WS Title. I’d have to say spoiled is the word, not dissapointed. If you want your team to try and buy the title every year, by all means go get yourself a Yankee hat. We can do without you slandering our great organization.

Anyways, W2G Waino!

Has anyone else wondered that if we can can keep Carpenter to the end of his active pitching career, what a fantastic pitching coach he’d make?
He’d be a natural!
