ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Cardinals finalized most of their minor-league coaching staffs Wednesday with a rotation of pitching coaches and a new position for in-house favorite Mark DeJohn. The affiliates are announcing the moves throughout the afternoon, with Class AAA Memphis and Class AA Springfield revealing their staffs earlier this hour.

Some moves of note:

  • Derek Lilliquist moves from pitching coordinator stationed in Jupiter, Fla., to be the pitching coach at Triple-A Memphis.
  • Blaise Isley, the pitching coach for Memphis this past season, moves to Jupiter, Fla., to take Lilliquist’s role as the coordinator who also oversees rehab from all levels.
  • Bryan Eversgerd goes from Class AA Springfield to High-A Palm Beach as pitching coach.
  • And Dennis Martinez, the former big-league All-Star, moves from his pitching coach role with the teams in Palm Beach to be the pitching coach at Class AA Springfield.

In another move of note the Cardinals will shift DeJohn from manager of the short-season Class A Batavia club to essentially a roaming quality-control position. His job will be similar to the one vacated by Jim Riggleman several seasons ago, in the sense that DeJohn will be charged with assuring things are being taught in a consistent manner throughout the organization. All of Riggleman’s responsibilities have been divided among several people since his departure, but this roving special instructor position had not been filled.

“We have a Cardinals way of playing and a Cardinals way of teaching, and we want to make sure we’re teaching it the same way at every level,” VP/Farm Director Jeff Luhnow said. “That will be some of what DJ does. He’ll also go out and help with the development of our managers. That is something we want to be aware of, too, and we think he can help our manager’s develop like the players.”

Dann Bilardello will serve as manager in Batavia, replacing DeJohn.

The Cardinals are in the process of interviewing managerial positions for the open spot at High-A Palm Beach.

Dyar Miller will remain as the minor-league pitching coordinator.

During the season, pitching coach Dave Duncan expressed concern to The Post-Dispatch about a disconnect between the major-league staff and the minor-league staff, particularly when it came to establishing a way to develop pitchers and a philosophy of instruction. Luhnow said these moves were not inspired by those comments or Duncan’s concern, but there will be an attempt this winter and throughout next season to “bridge any gap that may exist.”

Chris Maloney will return to manage the PCL champ Memphis team, and Ron “Pop” Warner will return as the manager of Springfield. Johnny Rodriguez, the hitting coach from the Johnson City club, will move up to manage the Low-A Quad Cities team. Tim Leveque will be the QC PC. All six of the Cardinals’ affiliates have new pitching coaches, according to the club.

Martinez wanted to try coaching and the Cardinals offered him a chance to do it near his Miami home. This year he’ll move to Springfield, Mo., and travel with the team there. One of the benefits, Luhnow said, of having El Presidente at Springfield is the fact that several of the team’s top Latin prospects will be with Springfield this year. Eduardo Sanchez and Francisco Samuel could start the year in the bullpen there, and Richard Castillo and Arquimedes Nieto are likely to pitch there at some point in the coming season.

Why no mention of the Duncan concern with how minor league pitchers are taught? Will Lilliquist be more in line with Duncan?

hitnrun: Did you see the third paragraph from the bottom? That paragraph is all about this issue that you mentioned.

The Memphis Redbirds win the PCL Championship on the strength of their pitching. How does the Cardinal organization reward Memphis pitching coach Blaise Isley for his great work? By demoting him to Jupiter, FL. This has “appease Duncan” written all over it.

Well said allentrapert. Pitch-to-contact sucks. Sure its great for beating the Pirates, but to win in the playoffs, you have to strike guys out.

why do the cardinals want to appease Duncan. He is a well organized hot head. There are other good pitching coaches.

Maybe this was to appease TLR to appease Albert.
