Next weekend is a big one at Powell Hall, with music director David Robertson and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra in two very different programs.

The first is the highly theatrical setting of the Requiem by Giuseppe Verdi’s, a big, dramatic piece with soaring melodies, big choruses and the most vivid “Dies Irae (Day of Wrath)” in the symphonic literature. The soloists are headed by St. Louis soprano Christine Brewer and include mezzo-soprano Elizabeth Bishop, tenor Marcus Haddock and bass-baritone Kyle Ketelson. This is a don’t-miss evening.

For something completely different, consider Sunday afternoon’s “Broadway Valentine,” show music by George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein. The ever-delightful Orli Shaham will solo in Gershwin’s piano concerto, while Robertson, her husband, conducts the SLSO.
