Opera Theatre of St. Louis’s popular “Spotlight on Opera” evenings are back — with some changes.

Chief among those is the location: the “Spotlight” will now shine at the Ethical Society of St. Louis, 9001 Clayton Road. The Ethical Society is centrally located (an important consideration since MoDOT will close both of the primary bridges over Interstate 64/Highway 40 leading south from the Clayton area for most of the opera season), and it has a large parking lot.

Each of the four evenings of discussion and music takes place on a Monday evening at 7:30, and puts one of the season’s the operas in context, in a unique and entertaining way.

The first “Spotlight” will focus on the season’s second opera, Richard Strauss’s “Salome.” On May 11, “Salome: The Psychology of Strauss’s Masterwork” will feature an introduction to the story by Dr. Gerald Izenberg of Washington University and the St. Louis Psychological Institute.

There will also be insights into the production process from OTSL music director Stephen Lord, stage director Seán Curran, and costume designer Bruno Schwengl. Musical selections will be performed by some of OTSL’s Gerdine Young Artists; after the formal presentations, audience members may enjoy refreshments with the panelists.

Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the door or by calling the OTSL box office at (314) 961-0644.

The other Spotlight presentations are Puccini’s “La bohème” on May 18, Mozart’s “Il re pastore, June 1, and John Corigliano’s “The Ghosts of Versailles,” on June 15. Charter Communications is the presenting sponsor for the Spotlight on Opera series.
