The St. Louis Art Museum and Washington University have chosen Bruce Yonemoto and Ian Munroe as the Henry L. and Natalie E. Freund Teaching Fellows for the academic years 2009-10 and 2010-11. A unique collaboration between the two institutions, the Freund fellowship brings artists to campus for two-month residencies after which the museum mounts an exhibition of their work in its “Currents” series. Since the program was established in 1995, artists such as Michael Byron, Catherine Opie, Ellen Gallagher, Matthew Buckingham, Angelina Gualdoni, Sarah Oppenheimer and Claudia Schmacke – whose work remains on view at the museum through July 5 - have participated. Yonemoto, who is based in Los Angeles, plays with the conventions of Hollywood and post-war American iconography in his films, videos and sculptural installations. Monroe, who graduated from Washington University in 1995 and is currently based in London, creates large-scale collages from such banal materials as vinyl, Formica, linoleum, Perspex, aluminum, foam-core and leather. Yonemoto and Munroe were chosen by Patrician Olynyk, director of the graduate school of art, and Charlotte Eyerman, the museum’s curator of modern and contemporary art. Tricia Paik, the museum’s assistant curator of modern and contemporary art, will organize both “Currents” exhibitions.
