Webster University has a new orchestra conductor
There’s a new face - and a new baton - on campus at Webster University. Both belong to Dr. Paul G. Davis, taking up his duties as an associate professor, conductor of the Webster University Symphony Orchestra, and director of instrumental studies for the music department in the Leigh Gerdine College of Fine Arts.
Davis, whose background includes professional work in both classical and jazz in conducting, performance and teaching, is starting a new program called the “Conductor’s Circle” - with opportunities to meet performers and learn more about the music played in the orchestra’s concerts - for anyone who buys a season ticket.
Davis holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting from the University of Texas at Austin; he’s been on the faculty at some impressive schools, including the Petrie School of Music at Converse College in South Carolina, Kennesaw State University in Atlanta, Georgia, at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. He’s been a guest conductor and music director for other orchestras, including everything from the Amy Grant NBC Christmas telecast to the Montana Summer Symphony Orchestra.
