SANTA FE - Christine Brewer’s performance in the title role of Gluck’s Alceste on Wednesday night showed the soprano in prime vocal condition, singing through her long, challenging role with her customary big gleaming tone and secure technique. By the evening’s end, her injured right knee was clearly taxing her, but it didn’t show in her singing.

The production at the Santa Fe Opera marks her return to opera after her injury last spring. For a full review of Alceste and the other operas in the 2009 season, see Sunday’s A&E section.

i wish i could have been there. i went to santa fe last year for the first time, and it was ideal in so many ways -setting, production values, quality of singing, etc. - that it remains a standard of what a summer opera festival should be. and i have been to glyndebourne.
