Yesterday, it was announced that James Levine, music director of both the Metropolitan Opera and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, had to withdraw from several performances because of sudden unexpected back surgery.

Today two more substitutes were named. Edo de Waart, a solid Straussian, will take over three October performances of Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier, while commuting back and forth to Milwaukee, where he’s music director of the orchestra.

Another fine conductor will step in for the BSO’s gala Carnegie Hall season opener on Thursday evening, Daniele “Danny Cats” Gatti.
