GrooveLily’s Valerie Vigoda and Brendan Milburn will offer a master class on writing songs for musicals on Saturday, Oct. 3, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Washington University’s Edison Theatre, 6445 Forsyth Boulevard. It’s free and open to all.

The master class concentrates on the big transition from writing pop songs to writing for the musical theatre. Vigoda and Milburn draw on plenty of experience with GrooveLily, the power-pop trio that’s returning to the Ovations! series with its latest show, “Sleeping Beauty Wakes.” A witty twist on the old fairy tale, this show finds Beauty coming around from a 900-year snooze in a sleep-disorder clinic, far from her kingdom and her prince. “Sleeping Beauty Wakes” plays at the Edison at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2, and Sat., Oct. 3.
