OTSL: Critical cheers elsewhere for Stephen Lord and James Robinson
Opera Theatre of St. Louis music director Stephen Lord and artistic director James Robinson have both earned accolades in the news media recently.
Lord, conducting Verdi’s “Rigoletto” at London’s English National Opera, has garnered particularly enthusiastic review. The esteemed critic Hugh Canning, of the even more esteemed The Times of London, wrote that “Stephen Lord, an ENO debutant, brings atmospheric melodrama to Verdi’s astonishing score.”
In the Oxford Times, Christopher Gray wrote, “A series of exceptionally strong performances under the American conductor Stephen Lord ensures that it sounds marvellous…”
Meanwhile, at the San Francisco Opera, Robinson’s production of Puccini’s “Il Trittico” was deemed “the finest offering of General Director David Gockley’s tenure to date” by Joshua Kosman in the San Francisco Chronicle.
