Quick: how many living jazz artists can you name? Wynton Marsalis? OK, who else? It’s easy enough for even casual jazz fans to cite the greats, from Miles Davis to Charlie Parker to John Coltrane. But artists who are still among us generally don’t enjoy that sort of name recognition. For every Wynton Marsalis, there are scores of jazz musicians who are equally worthy of your attention - including pianist Jacky Terrasson, who will be appearing at Jazz at the Bistro next month.

Born to an American mother and a French father, Terrasson has a truly multicultural perspective on jazz. His music is solidly in the tradition, yet engagingly ambitious. In the 1990s, Terrasson released several first-rate trio recordings in the company of bassist Ugonna Okegwo and drummer Leon Parker. And he continues to rank among the very best jazz pianists - no small feat, considering that the field also includes the likes of Brad Mehldau, Jason Moran and Matthew Shipp.

If you’re into jazz that’s accessible as well as adventurous, Jacky’s your man. Sets are at 8:30 and 10:15 p.m. from Dec. 17 through 20 at Jazz at the Bistro, 3536 Washington Boulevard. Tickets are $25-$30.  For more information, call 314-534-1111 or 314-289-4030, or visit jazzstl.org.
