The answer is, both. One of the most engaging singers in either jazz or cabaret, West has earned a solid following for her imaginative approach to the Great American Songbook. As a vocalist, she offers the best of both worlds - you can clearly hear the lyrics, but she also swings as impressively as such classic jazz artists as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. You can experience West’s magic when she performs Saturday, Nov. 22 at the Sheldon Concert Hall. She certainly has a wide array of material from which to draw, and her albums - including “Restless,” “Temptation” and “Come What May” - are all winners. The show is at 8 p.m. at the Sheldon, 3648 Washington Boulevard. Tickets are $35 and $40, but you can get a $10 discount by going to www.metrotix.com/promotions and entering the code PAULA10. If you like Cassandra Wilson and Dianne Reeves, you definitely owe it to yourself to check West out. But cabaret fans will likely dig her as well.
