A fun show at the Sheldon

Scott Miller and the “New Line All-Stars” put together a really fun show last night (Monday, 1/5/09), “Night of the Living Show Tunes.” Yeah, it’s a musical theater revue - one with some really funny, smart material, a lot of it drawn from shows that New Line has staged in their entirety. A fundraiser for the troupe and its new scholarship fund, the show plays again tonight (Tuesday, 1/6) at 8 at the Sheldon Concert Hall. The stately hall and the offbeat material made a great combination, elegant but relaxed - you know, like you have style, but you’re used to it. Also, the tickets are $10, which allows almost anyone to feel like a patron of the arts.

One big treat: Margeau Steinau reprises “Ready To Settle,” the hilariously insulting love song that she performed a few months ago in “High Fidelity.” There’s also a delicious quartet (Nikki Glenn, Talichia Noah, Khnemu Menu-Ra and Joel Hackbarth) singing ”Madeleine” from “Jacques Brel. . .” (which New Line ought to stage again sometime) and real-life married couple Amy and Nick Kelly romping through ”Getting Married Today” from “Company.” Speaking of Sondheim, isn’t it time for Miller to have another go at “Sweeney Todd”?

I saw Monday’s show - very entertaining! For me the highlight was definitely Talichia Noah’s “And I Am Telling You” from Dreamgirls. That woman can sing!!

Talichia did a good job… I would like to see her get some formal training. At times I felt that she was out of breath and not as controlled. I loved the show overall. I have to admit I have never seen a New Line show but if the performers the other night were any indication… I want season tickets.

My favorites were the two guys that sang the duet in the beginning and the lady in the red dress (I lost my program or I would know their names). OH and the older African American gentleman… he can sing to me anytime!
