Jazz giant Sonny Rollins to perform at the Touhill
Sonny Rollins, arguably the greatest living jazz saxophonist, is scheduled to perform on Sept. 19 at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center.
Along with his peers Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane, Rollins set the tone for modern jazz. His classic albums include “Way Out West” (which is famous for its cover art featuring Rollins in a cowboy outfit) and “Saxophone Colossus.” Rollins’ discs also include “Tenor Madness” (which features a track on which he performs opposite Coltrane), “Plus Three” and the recent “Road Shows, Vol. 1″ The concert is a Jazz St. Louis presentation.
Just about every jazz saxophonist of the last half-century has been influenced by Rollins. Still, there’s nothing like hearing the master.
The concert is at 8 p.m. at the Touhill. Tickets cost $35, $50 and $125 and go on sale August 3. For more information, call 314-516-4949 or go to www.touhill.org.
