Hoffa and Teamsters back Obama
WASHINGTON — The International Brotherhood of Teamsters endorsed Sen. Barack Obama Wednesday, putting the powerful — and growing — 1.4-million-member union in the corner of the senator from Illinois.
The union acted now because of several factors, Teamster President Jim Hoffa said. Previous polling of members had included Sen. John Edwards, and the union wanted to do a one-on-one poll involving Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton. That poll favored Obama, Hoffa said. In addition, the union was impressed by Obama’s momentum in the primaries, and particularly by his forceful language on wanting to renegotiate NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement. “That’s innovative thinking, the kind of thinking we need,” Hoffa said. Obama’s win Tuesday in the Wisconsin primary also played a role, Hoffa said. Wednesday, the union’s General Executive Board voted unanimously to endorse Obama.
The first campaign events for Obama will be in Ohio, Hoffa said.
NAFTA was negotiated while President Bill Clinton was in office, but the endorsement of Obama was nothing personal against either Clinton, Hoffa said. “I hold Sen. Clinton in the highest regard, as well as President Clinton, Hoffa said. “This is not about them.”
The union hopes to continue to work with Hillary Clinton, whether she is a senator or president, Hoffa said.
The union has almost a quarter-million members in Illinois and Missouri.

Since my previous post was eliminated by Communist non free-speecher union sympathizer Phil Dine - this from Karl Rove:
The truth is that Mr. Obama is unwilling to challenge special interests if they represent the financial and political muscle of the Democratic left. He says yes to the lobbyists of the AFL-CIO when they demand card-check legislation to take away the right of workers to have a secret ballot in unionization efforts, or when they oppose trade deals. He won’t break with trial lawyers, even when they demand the ability to sue telecom companies that make it possible for intelligence agencies to intercept communications between terrorists abroad. And he is now going out of his way to proclaim fidelity to the educational unions. This is a disappointment since he’d earlier indicated an openness to education reform. Mr. Obama backs their agenda down the line, even calling for an end to testing, which is the only way parents can know with confidence whether their children are learning and their schools working.
These stands represent not just policy vulnerabilities, but also a real danger to Mr. Obama’s credibility and authenticity. He cannot proclaim his goal is the end of influence for lobbies if the only influences he seeks to end are lobbies of the center and the right.
