SEIU backs Obama

WASHINGTON — The second-biggest union in the country, the Service Employees International Union, with 1.9 million members, endorsed Barack Obama for president on Friday. In a conference call with reporters, SEIU President Andy Stern and Secretary-Treasurer Anna Burger said that the union’s executive board had “overwhelmingly” voted to endorse Obama.

Previously, 11 state branches of the union had enforsed John Edwards, a half-dozen were for Obama — including Illinois and Missouri — and New York was for Hillary Clinton.

Stern said he had “a tremendous amount of respect for Sen. Clinton, but it’s clear that our members now think it’s time” to get behind Obama. Edwards’ withdrawal from the race was one factor, he said, adding that the national endorsement would take the place of previous state endorsements. Stern praised Obama for having created “a broader and deeper coalition of voters than I’ve seen in decades.”

As for differences in issues related to labor, Stern cited the war in Iraq, which Obama initially opposed and Clinton supported. Many SEIU members have children in the military, Stern said.

Asked by the Post-Dispatch whether the New York branch of SEIU had resisted the move, Stern said it had abstained. Asked what that would mean in practical terms, Stern said the New York branch was trying to work out how to balance its previous stand with the union’s move. Asked whether New York was the only state to abstain, Stern said he wasn’t sure.

Phil, as a union supporter, could you please tell me why the unions are supporting the democrat candidates who support open borders and allowing the flow of illegal immigrants who take lower than minimum wage jobs and take jobs away from unions workers? Please explain - I am confused about this. Don’t illegal immigrants articially lower wages for all in the lower wage jobs? Maybe I am wrong.

There are some people that one can not like, no matter what that person does or does not do. Hillary Clinton is one of those. I do not care if she can turn lead into gold or water into wine, there is just something about her that I can not like. I had others tell me that they have the same feeling about her. I do wish that she would get the nomination for the Democrats because I believe that she would be easier to defeat .

Centwist….Democrats want to stop the hiring off illegals by penalizing the employers. Republicans encourage it by laxing regulations….Democrats and organized labor have always supported the down trodden….We support legal immigrants and a fair wage. There’s a process we believe in and it’s based on fairness….Republicans, on the other hand, think business has a capitalistic right to exploit others….Just look around.

Hey Centrist, don’t worry about those illegal immigrants. The way it works in Garrison’s world is, if we have more illegal immigrants willing to work for two bucks an hour, that frees up all those people who would be pushing mops and emptying wastebaskets for minimum wage to do more meaningful work.

If only we get enough illegal immigrants in here, your janitor can quit mopping and go to law school. Three years later, he’ll be an associate at a major firm, and within a decade, he’ll be earning seven figures and living in Ladue. Republicans, on the other hand, want to keep the illegals out, so they can keep Americans, primarily women and people of color, stuck in these low wage jobs.

Garrison,

If ten to twenty million illegal aliens are allowed citizenship and millions more pour into America, it will be because of the Democrats, not the Republicans.

This is from the Democratic Party website;

“Senator Reid and the Democratic leadership in Congress deserve a lot of credit for listening to the American people, for listening to the experts, and after participating in countless hearings, fighting to work in a bipartisan manner to deliver a comprehensive immigration reform package that would be tough and restore order to the border, but would also be smart and practical. Today’s vote doesn’t end the immigration debate. It’s an issue that won’t go away. It was, however, a failure to address what’s needed at our borders, and it fails to address 12 million immigrants, most of whom are hard working and law abiding, and who will not go away by virtue of Republican obstructionism. Democrats will continue to look for ways to address the issue. The American people deserve better, and America is capable of better.”

If you want fifty million Mexicans coming into America, supported by tax dollars that could be going to American citizens, just vote Democrat.

Hey, would it really cost $95 BILLION to deport all the illegal aliens?

Is that what you want Centwist, dimmy?

Tell us how you would do it precisley, what agencies, what facilities, what manpower, what transport, etc.? Would you shoot those which run? Maybe waterboard the captured to find others to deport? No problem, just do it…typical right wing necon Brown Shirt weblog echochambering yobbo yapper response to a situation!

Hey, do we all have to leave because the only real Americans which aren’t illegal are the folks who lived here before European settlers came over and murdered the native populations and took the land? I say deport CENTWISTED, sic and vicous, dim star, and the rest of the yobbo yappers first! Are you yobbo yappers going to enforce all the broken treaties with Native Americans, now? That would be required by your stated goal of making our borders safe and enforcing the laws on the books? Deport settlers from all Native American lands all illegals and recognize and enforce their native lands borders because that’s what the law says! Yeah, right!

The folks who come to the US don’t take jobs from US workers which would be union jobs, they come and work for wages which US workers refuse. Enforcing sanctions against employers would have prevented the influx of migrants for work except the GOP has been in charge of the federal government for most of the last 40 years and supported employers’ efforts and ignored the law.

The “issue” of the status of illegal immigration is just another Karl Rovian red herring false choice to stir up resentment and blame someone for whatever problems the yobbo yappers want to claim is due to some “other” so they can win some splinter votes and use the wedge to win an election. If there were so many problems with immigration doncha think that two terms of Ronny Reagan, one of Bush 41, and two of W would have addressed it? Nope. As long as it serves the interests of the facist corporatists which are the GOP, nothing was or will be done. As for the neo cons and their Brown Shirted ilk, if they can blame what’s “wrong with America” on someone or something other than the GOP and the far right wing, they’ll take the shot.

The workers often use a federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) instead of a Social Security Number to obtain employment and the employers deduct federal and state income taxes, FICA, FUI, SUI and other taxes from paid wages which will not go to the worker and provide for services which the worker may not use.

A sane policy would impose some penalties upon illegal workers wishing to formally enter the country and would provide for a resolution of their status so as to provide stability and a structure for recognizing immigrants’ contributions as citizens as well as to the economy.

Or do we all go back where we came from?
